Walcot Street Public Art: new image

Donation protected

The piece of public art on the big wall on Walcot Street, Bath - a stretched version of a Stanley Donwood Holloway print - that Bath Fringe financed (as part of an intervention for the festival) a couple of years back surprised us all by staying up a great deal longer than we'd dare to hope. That people liked it - it appeared on blogs right round the world - didn't surprise us at all. It was painted over (as always was the intention) as part of a Walcot St. event in the autumn, and now some clever person has decided that they can best contribute to everyone's happiness by tearing it down.

So we're proposing another one: in fact we're hoping to inaugurate a tradition. Just this time we don't have Arts Council money to do it. Nor B&NES Council money. But that's not a problem, we think Walcot Street can more than handle it on their own.

As a kick-off we have another Donwood (a different one) offered, and we'd like to run that, not least because the artist has donated the right to use the image (something we would otherwise expect to pay for). But if this crowdfunder works we can make the turnround more regular, and maybe even occasionally commission a piece of work from someone who isn't generating work at such a manic pace as Mr. D. Do this one, it'll be great, and help us make it a tradition that will add to the Walcot St. vibe at a time when all of that sort of thing is sorely needed.

We're asking for £600 to make another massive print on the right kind of plastic to withstand the weather (we've already got a discount on the job). If we raise significantly more than that we can have a stretch target to upgrade to a tougher material. The image and the work of putting it up have already been promised. On the weekend of June 9-11 2017 we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first Walcot Nation Day street festival, and it'd be nice to have this one up by then.
