Friends of Animals is a small, 501(c)3 nonprofit animal shelter in Cloquet Minnesota.  We outgrew our previous shelter due to the building wearing out. What we really needed was a building that increased our space, and also provided us the opportunity to remodel it to better serve our animals' needs.  The ideal new shelter included an upgraded air filtration system with a separate air system in the medical rooms; room to house the sick animals separate from the healthy animals; room to house the available and non-available animals in separate areas; more inside and outside exercise areas for the dogs; better laundry and washing facilities;  better drainage in the kennels; consistent heat and cooling throughout the buillding; more storage space for food and other necessities; and less crowding for all the animals.

We were in our previous building since 1991.

It was never intended for use as an animal shelter, but served us well, but it simply became worn out.  All winter we battled frozen pipes that leaked or burst.  We had limited water sources and an inadequate drainage system.  Trim and molding was falling off of walls, and the exterior and interior metal walls were literally rusting away.  The electrical supply was limited, to the point where we couldn't use a microwave and toaster at the same time without losing power.  Heating and cooling the front half of the building was a hit or miss; either too cold or too hot.  In the winter months we used electric space heaters to keep the cat rooms warm.  The flooring was worn and coming apart, and storage was inadequate to house pallets of cat litter and animal food.  We had very poor ventilation, often causing us to use fans and open doorways for circulation, contributing to illness, especially in cats.  At the end of 2016 our large, double utility sink actually fell off the wall!!  So we patched things up and continued on as best as we could.  But patches only went so far.

We have dreamed of a better facility for the animals for so long  and you helped make this dream come true for those thouands of animals that come through our doors by helping us fund the remodeling. Our new facility has been used as the old license bureau and human services of cloquet in the past, so it needed a lot of construction before we could move the animals in.

We moved into our new facility in May of 2018.

The people that work at our shelter all have passionate hearts when it comes to the animals.  They do so much with so little.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has helped us regardless of the size of the donation.   Every penny goes a long way toward better animal care.

Thank you again for your genorosity and support! We couldn't have done it without you!

With heavy and broken hearts Friends of Animals Humane Society Board of Directors announces that it will be closing its doors no later than August 5th. There were several contributing factors in 2017 that have led us to this decision. Unfortunately the remodeling of our new facility and other factors has given us to much debt to sustain shelter operations, the mortgage, finish remodeling, and maintain the building.

Although Boldt was a huge reason in the success of putting a plan together for the remodel and overseeing the project, we had issues with other contractors that contributed to a lack of organization as a whole. One particular contractor chose not to honor his agreement to assist with free labor from the apprentice program as well, doubled their bid that was verbally give. The same contractor delayed the job of which was already on a timeline due to the sale of our prior facility. This delay also caused issues with other contractors who had difficulty honoring their timelines. Consequently, due to these many issues and delays we used all our savings as well as it left us with $100,000 mortgage and a facility that is not finished of which we cannot afford to finish or maintain.

In 2017 we had hired new Directors that were in charge of making new money to assist us with the new facility and growth of Friends of Animals, those directors did not raise the new funds as needed or required.

And as we have previously shared, our new leadership had also concluded that the contracts we had with local City’s and Townships for impound services were no longer effective and were costing us to provide animal control and animal care.

Approximately eight months ago the new Interim Director stepped in because the facility was on the verge of closing at that time. She came in to review whether we could get Friends of Animals back on track and sustainable and viable. However, because of the many issues in 2017 the business no longer seems viable due to lack of funds and donations and a facility that is unsustainable.

To pay off and finish the renovation of our facility to healthy standards and pay for operations through the end of the year we have concluded it would cost $350,000. Our goal as mentioned in the Pine Journal, Cloquet Minnesota is by closing now and using money from our public appeal we would pay off our bills, mortgage, and finish our facility leaving us the possibility of reopening in the future.

Friends of Animals deeply believes and their mission to help the homeless animals in our community. We will be working to adopt out or transfer all the animals in our care to no kill facility partners by our close date. We will also not be taking any animals in effective immediately.

We would like to think that this is for now and not forever. We are working on several different options that may allow Friends of Animals to come back at some capacity. Words are not enough to thank the 100’s if not 1000’s of people that over the years have given their blood, sweat, and tears to the shelter. Together we have saved 1000’s of innocent animals that needed us. Your sacrifices did not go unnoticed, for those that have given so much of themselves and supported us last 34 years we are eternally grateful.

We are asking for a plea to help Save Our Shelter! So if you are unable to donate to our cause then please share our campaign and spread the word.

As many of you all know we moved into our new facility at the beginning of May 2017 while we were still undergoing the last minute touches. It has been a hectic, fun, exciting, stressful, but very eventful year! We want to give all our amazing donors, volunteers and staff a HUGE thank you for everything because if it wasn't for them we wouldn't be where we are today!

Our new building is everything we could have asked for and more. However we went way over budget and as much as we were trying to avoid having a mortgage that unfortunately didn't happen. So our campaign is still ongoing as we are trying to "Fire up and Burn" this mortgage !

Could you host a root beer float sale at school or work and donate funds? Make an online donation. Pass the plate. We are the community's shelter and we love it when the community comes together to show their support. Have some fun with this - and thanks for the helping paw!
