A new home for Stillwater Music

“Stillwater literally changed my son’s life. He truly found himself through playing music and Stillwater is the reason that happened.”

“Our daughter would never have had the confidence to stand up in front of a group and speak, much less sing, without Stillwater Foundation. She was so shy and quiet. Stillwater has helped her find her voice and her confidence.”

"I’m a 50-something adult who never felt comfortable playing music in front of an audience as a child. Thanks to Stillwater, I love it and can’t wait to get on the stage. This experience has affected my life in so many positive ways and it would not have happened without the folks at Stillwater.”

These are just a few quotes from parents and students at Stillwater Music in Durango, Colorado, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We hear stories like this every day at Stillwater and we are committed to continuing to provide these kinds of experiences for our students.

In 2005, Stillwater Music (then known as the Stillwater Foundation) was created to provide educational opportunities for youth and adults to participate in quality music instruction in a safe and positive environment. Instructors for Stillwater programs are intrinsically dedicated to providing the best possible opportunities for area youth and adults in their area of musical expertise.

Stillwater students are encouraged to explore and expand their limitations both creatively and physically. We feel strongly that keeping kids engaged in music helps build character, teamwork and self-confidence, in essence creating better people through music education. Stillwater Music admits students regardless of age, race, national or ethnic origin, cultural or financial background, and physical or mental challenges.

Our mission is to share the joy of playing music by developing in our students the skills, confidence and ability to play music in a performing band. Each band is led by a talented professional musician who creates a safe, collaborative, inspiring and fun learning environment, matching students by skill level and age to the appropriated band.

By providing a safe and fun educational opportunity for youth and adults in the Durango and the surrounding communities for the past eleven years, Stillwater Music’s program has grown from 12 to over 300 students annually of all abilities, backgrounds, ethnicities and ages. With a strong focus on creating better people through music, Stillwater incorporates life lessons, which provide valuable skills that help students prosper throughout many aspects of their lives. Stillwater bands perform live at over 45 events throughout the year, many of which are in support of other non-profit organizations to assist with their fundraising efforts. Stillwater Music also hosts two concert events of their own every year, Party in the Park in May and Winter Wonder Bands in December.

Stillwater partners with Durango School District 9-R, Mountain Middle School and the Durango Montessori School to provide additional music program offerings or to serve as the primary music program for these educational institutions. Low income and at-risk youth are served through a scholarship program and a referral relationship with La Plata Youth Services. Stillwater Music’s dedication to providing high quality, alternative and innovative music education and its ongoing efforts to promote non-profit collaboration provide a very significant, positive impact on Durango and surrounding communities.

Over the years, Stillwater Music’s growth has prompted moves to two consecutive larger locations. Finding affordable space that can accommodate a unique operation such as Stillwater’s has not always been easy.  In fact, Stillwater Music’s current location has been in an aging building that originally housed a car wash. While we have enjoyed our relationship with a generous landlord there, we have once again outgrown the space and find that we need a location that will allow for even more growth.  In addition, in a very recent turn of events, the entire building has been put up for sale and Stillwater has chosen not to renew the lease when the building has an uncertain future.

After several years of searching for a better place to thrive, we have finally found our new home at the Crossroads Center in the center of town in Durango, Colorado.

As expected, this new location requires a significant remodel to meet our current and future needs.

Money raised through this campaign will go directly to the remodel of this new facility, which has been carefully planned to include many enhancements for our students and staff.

This remodel construction project will begin in early December, 2016 and will last through February so donations are needed as soon as possible.

Your donation will mean so much to Stillwater Music and the communities we serve as we will be able to continue our mission to create better human beings through the vehicle of music.

We are so very thankful to live in and serve the communities of the Four Corners area and to have such a wonderful group of students, parents, staff, instructors, and supporters that allow us to make a very positive impact by spreading the joy of music.

We can't begin to express our gratitude to all who donate to this very important and valuable cause and we will be honored to provide personalized tours of our new facility once this project is complete.
