NEW Samson Dubina Table Tennis Academy

Dan Ives once said, “You take an average coach and put him with a group of players in the right environment, and you will produce amazing results.  You take the world’s best coach and put him in a bad training environment, and he will never produce good players.”

During the last 11 years, we have done our best to produce great players.  But training in Samson’s basement everyday and only having a gym available two times per week isn’t enough.  We need daily training opportunities.  That is why we are opening…  The BRAND NEW Samson Dubina Table Tennis Academy!

What can you expect from the new academy???

From the very moment that you step inside the BRAND NEW Samson Dubina Table Tennis Academy, you will notice a difference.  We aren’t trying to be just another full-time club.  We are a community of individuals and families that are passionate about giving each person a fun and unique experience – regardless if you are Sarah Jalli competing for another international title or an average recreational Joe pinging around with his blue jeans and purple paddle.

During the last 11 years of social media marketing, we have been very optimistic in our approach.  But the reality is, it isn’t easy to grow the sport here in Akron, Ohio.  That is why we desperately need your support.   Your money will be used for more than just building the academy.  Your money will be used to begin a new trend nationwide.  Academies across the country are copying our marketing approach with social media promotions, tournament ideas, coaching techniques, and training camps.  As we grow and expand, the entire country grows and expands.

We need to raise $30,000 in startup money before the academy opens.  This money will be used for the big ticket items of new lighting, rubberized flooring, pro shop, and office equipment.

Final 10 Days of the Campaign!

The City of Akron is very excited about the opening of the NEW Samson Dubina Table Tennis Academy here in Akron and is supporting our efforts! They love the idea of a family-friendly event open 36 hours/week that is alternative to the traditional entertainment available throughout the Akron area. Within the next few weeks, we will make a public announcement as to which building we select. Tomorrow morning, we are visiting another excellent location that is a strong possibility of housing our new academy!

Here are the criteria we are looking for…
Akron Area
6000-12000 sq ft
Parking for 50-100 Cars
Excellent Heat / AC
Rent $2500-$3500/month
Large Open Space with Few or No Poles
Close Proximity to the Highway
Safe Neighborhood for Families
Hotels Close by for Out-of-Town Visitors

If we are able to reach our $30,000 goal, then we will have the funds to get a very nice facility. If we don’t reach the goal, we will go a step down and build up more gradually. Thanks for your support! I’ll keep you updated as we move forward in the final 10 days!

Why are we taking the risk and opening a large, full-time training center for table tennis?

There are several reasons that I would like to outline:

#1 Family-Friendly Activity
There aren’t many activities that the whole family can do together year-round that are local, affordable, fun, entertaining, and focus on fitness for the body and mind! Table tennis is the perfect fit to bring families together here in Akron. Currently, we are only open on Mondays and Thursdays from 6pm-9pm. With the opening of the new academy, families will be able to enjoy table tennis anytime during the week – Tuesday after school, Friday night fun night, Saturday morning before chores begin… You name it! We will be open 6 days/week to bring families together!

#2 Elite Training
Table Tennis has been an Olympic sport since 1988. The US Junior team has been steadily rising with Kanak Jha recently being ranked the #1 Junior in the WORLD (yes, you read that right) and Amy Wang now being ranked the #2 Junior in the WORLD. As kids in Ohio follow in their footsteps, they need a world-class environment to train on a daily basis with daily group classes, daily private lessons, daily fitness groups, weekly leagues, frequent tournaments, and frequent training camps. Currently, most of my lessons are in the converted garage in our basement! (see video)

#3 My Current Workload
I’m currently coaching up to 40 hours/week plus doing office work up to 40 hours/week. It is tough for me to continue doing office work, international equipment sales, local promotions, managing events, and coaching full-time. With the NEW Samson Dubina TT Academy, Blake Cottrell will be managing my office work, product sales, inventory, accounting, billing, tournaments, and leagues. Another office worker will be the meet and greet party when you enter the building – the friendly employee will explain the programs that we offer and how you can benefit from the program – this employee will also be in charge of the pro shop and snack bar. As I delegate my responsibilities to others, this frees up more time with my family and more time to promote the sport to new families!

#4 Future Players
We are currently on the brink of really expanding the sport here in Ohio – there are a few ways. First, the school systems in the area are excited about table tennis. A recent school survey showed that up to 350 kids per school in the Akron area would be interested in joining a table tennis club. Teachers are also excited about the possibility. We will be hosting an ITTF Level-1 course for teachers this summer. Starting in the fall of 2019, we hope to have table tennis in at least 10-20 of the local schools. Another avenue of getting new players is to offer a program that is attractive enough for out-of-town players to move to Ohio. We have had at least 8-10 players mention that they would like to move to Ohio. Another avenue to getting new players to re-recruiting players that we have lost in the last few years. There are many reasons that we have lost them, but often it is due to a clash with other Monday/Thursday activities. As we will be open Monday-Saturday, we feel confident to get those kids and adults back into the sport.

#5 The Gospel
I’m very thankful that USATT just chose me as Coach of the Year for the 4th consecutive time, and I’m very thankful that I also recently got a Coach of the Year award from USOC. But in comparison to eternity before us, these temporary, earthly accomplishments are extremely insignificant. One of my many goals for opening the new academy is to create opportunities for me to personally share the Good News of Jesus Christ with fellow table tennis players. There are a few theme verses that I personally have…
1 Timothy 4:8
For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
Matt 28:18-20
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

So the question arises…

If this academy is such a good idea, what didn’t you open it previously?

Because of the great hospitality that we received at the Shaw JCC. They have been so good to us in accommodating our programs and helping to promote table tennis. From the very first day that I talked into the Shaw JCC, I have known a group of individuals who are truly looking for our success and have gone the extra mile for our promotions.

As we move to the NEW Academy this spring, I would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to all of my friends at the Shaw JCC!!!

I would also like to send out a huge thank you to the 41 people who have donated a total of $12,200 so far. We now have 2.5 weeks left and are still looking to raise $17,800! Thanks guys!

Dear GoFundMe Supporters!

We ONLY have 3 weeks left in our campaign journey. Thanks to those of you who have partnered with us so far. If you have friends or relatives who would be willing to help us fund the new academy, please feel free to pass along the info.

In addition to thanking the donors, I would also like to thank Blake Cottrell for helping us along the way. We have been mapping out the NEW SDTTA for a few years and we trust that our 17-page business plan gives us a detailed approach on how to develop and continue develop this business for years to come.

Here are some of the highlights of the NEW Samson Dubina Table Tennis Academy:
-Plenty of Parking
-Near the Highway - Convenient for Everyone
-Friendly Environment
-Fully Stocked Pro Shop
-Fully Stocked Snack/Drink Shop
-Spectator Seating
-Lounge Area
-Fitness Room
-Open Club Play 6 Days/Week
-6 Tournaments / Year
-8 Training Camps / Year

- New Premium Tables
- Spacious Courts
- Professional Rubberized Flooring in the Entire Gym
- 700 Lux lighting on Every Table
- Featured Matches with Scoreboards and Officials
-Training Balls Available
-Competition Balls Available
-Newgy Training Robots Available for Practice

As far as donation, here is what we plan to do based on the donations received between now and Feb 1st...

This is where we are currently at. I'm confident that we can at least break the $20,000 mark.

If we raise less than $30,000, we will need to lease a smaller facility, having some courts with rubberized flooring and some courts with cement, and wait for a few months on the lighting upgrade until the funds trickle in. We will still be opening this spring, but it will look and feel like a simple club, not an elite academy.

This is the exact amount that we need to install professional rubberized flooring on all the courts, put in amazing lighting, purchase office equipment, have plenty of spectator seating, furnish a lounge for parents, equip a training room, and have a well-stocked pro shop to meet all of your equipment needs.

With the additional funds received, we to expedite the hiring process getting some elite coaches and practice partners to strengthen the group classes, weekend clinics, and summer training camps. With more training partners, the practice quality goes up and each player receives more individual attention and training.

Thanks again for your support! If you have any questions regarding the NEW Academy, feel free to send us a message.

If you have any comments, free free to leave a comment below!

See you soon,
Samson Dubina
