It's Time to Build a Pig Barn

Over the past two years we have rescued FIVE pigs who now live at Barn Sanctuary: June, Jasper, Adam, Penny and Little Dude! They live comfortably in the pens that we built for them, but not with the amount of space they deserve. Their current pens were never meant to be permanent housing for them, just a temporary home until we built them a better barn. We used the space that was available in the current barns to build shelter for them so we could rescue them. Now, however, we've run out of space to build more pens and so we can't rescue any more pigs at this time.

The Pig Barn Priority

Did you know that pigs have been taught to play basic video games with their snouts just like certain primate species can? Pigs are the most intelligent animals at the sanctuary, and they are among the most sociable and gregarious. They need stimulation, a place to play, roam, root and forage.

Our mission at Barn Sanctuary is to give all of our residents the best care and quality of life possible. This is why our next big project is to build a pig barn this year. A pig barn will help us fulfill our mission to give our rescues what they deserve.

The pigs get bored in their current pens. We’ve seen it and we’re determined to fix it. The pig barn will give them a huge natural space to roam around and play in. It will allow us to introduce Adam, Penny, Jasper, and June to each other without worrying about territorial and defensive behaviors. It will even allow us to introduce Little Dude to his future pig family too (he currently thinks he's a cow). The most exciting part? A new pig barn will allow us to rescue more pigs this year! We get so many requests to rescue pigs and we simply don’t have the space to rescue anymore without a barn to place them.

There are lives out there who need our help, who need to find sanctuary, whose stories need to be told. Help us create a space for them at Barn Sanctuary. Donate to our Pig Barn Fundraiser today, and together we can create a safe space for future Barn Sanctuary rescues.

The Barn

We are building a dream barn for our pig residents and all the future rescues to come. It will be located in a secluded, wooded area of the property. With over 6,000 square feet of space, it will include separate living stalls, covered porches, separate isolation and examination rooms, plus a room for straw and feed storage. They will have room to roam and explore outside, plus clean nesting areas indoors. The building will be built for public tours as well with enough space inside for people to walk through and greet the happy rescues.

Please donate today to help us rescue more pigs and make this dream a reality!

It was a white, icy Michigan winter in 2016. We just founded Barn Sanctuary a few months before. We were starting to renovate the old barn for our first two rescues (two calves: Henry and Cora) when we got a call about a full grown male pig that needed a home… Jasper. He was 600 pounds and living at a horse rescue while his temporary caretakers were searching for a new home for him—somewhere safe, where he could live out the rest of his life. We heard that his previous owner raised him as a pet and would even take Jasper with him in the car to construction sites.

He was a 600 pound baby, alone after years of having a human companion... now at the mercy of strangers. We didn’t have a pig pen built in the barn yet, but there was space to build one. We couldn’t let him be sold off to the highest bidder or adopted for slaughter. We built our first makeshift pig pen and brought him home, where he would be safe forever.

Soon after we rescued Jasper we realized that he needed a buddy... enter June. June was abandoned and left to die in a barrel. Someone found her, still alive, with eye infections and pneumonia. After having come so close to losing her life, she was FULL of it when we first met her. She ran several laps around us in the yard when we first met us. It took three people and lots of treats to get her into a trailer. Her wild spirit was a perfect fit for Jasper’s tranquil one. They became fast friends and they still live together in the same pen we built for Jasper in the winter of 2016.
