Imagine being an elementary school student, 5-10 years old trying to learn and concentrate on an empty stomach. For many of our New Jersey students this is a daily struggle.
I recently started teaching at a Title 1 school in New Jersey and was baffled when I found out how the lunch system works. When a family cannot afford to pay the balance on their child's lunch account, the child's hot meal is taken away and replaced with a cold cheese sandwich. In this day and age of understanding the importance of nutrition, what is happening at some of our neighborhood schools is so disappointing. The embarrassment these kids face from the stigma associated with the cheese sandwich is causing many to avoid eating lunch altogether.
What is even more upsetting about this, is that these unpaid balances follow the families right through high school. If these balances are not paid off, they can be a major obstacle for these children to graduate.
I have set up this GoFundMe page to try to raise enough money to pay off the lunch balances at my current school. My goal is to eventually extend this mission throughout New Jersey and change this lunch system completely.
