The Nepal Project

Located in Nagarkot, Nepal, the Shila Devi School serves some of Nepal's most impoverished children with the opportunity to attend school in a safe and stimulating environment. Throughout the years, Shila Devi has grown to hold more than one hundred students, many who walk kilometers each day to reach its blue gates. It is the astonishing grit and perseverance in these young little people that gives us hope for the future. Poverty is often a trap in many communities around the world, but through education, we hope to break the cycle of poverty. With that, we ask for your support, in contributing to the longevity of not only the Shila Devi School but also the impact which is being made all throughout Nagarkot.

The Nepal Project was initiated in 2014, by two distinguished educators at the Stockholm International School. After a workshop in which they trained educators in impoverished communities of Nepal, they realized how urgent the need for more awareness towards the quality of the education was. From there the project became student-led, amassing more than sixty youth members since its beginning.  As a youth-led NGO, we have seen first hand the impact which youth helping youth has had, not only monetarily but emotionally. It is the connections which our members have forged with the parents, the educators, and most importantly the children in Nepal which makes the project ever-so-special.

Our work is local, and all donations and contributions are directly donated to benefit the Shila Devi school. Unlike bigger organizations, our focus is to not only to provide funds, but also educational support in the form of teacher training. It is the Nepal Project's connection with the community and small-scale work which distinguishes it from the rest.  

The school is a safe haven for many of those who attend it - with the chance to learn in the classrooms with their friends being an escape from the at times challenging circumstances many students come from. Thus far, our project has facilitated the renewal and reconstruction of the school, which was destroyed after the devastating earthquake which hit the area in 2015. We have successfully begun to introduce the use of IT within the Shila Devi school, having brought iPads on our most recent mission. An extension to the main building will be added to include a library and IT lab, in order expand the quality of learning at the school. We strongly believe in the implementation of a technology-supported curriculum, in order to offer our students the tools to build a better life for themselves. Every day, we strive to provide our students with a creative environment in which they can be inspired to learn, create, and dream.

Throughout the years, the generous donations gathered through fundraising have been used to provide our students with physical needs, including school supplies, hot meals, school uniforms, sanitary products, and shoes. Furthermore, we have supported the school by expanding its infrastructure to include two extra classrooms, providing sports equipment, and most importantly physical and emotional support to staff. 

All of the donations gathered will be used to support the building and furnishing of both our I.T lab and library. The rest of donations will be used to support prospective projects, such as building a playground and adding more tech-support in the classrooms.
