Need help restoring my vision

Donation protected
This is the most humbling thing I’ve ever had to do, but current circumstances have left me with no choice but to swallow my pride.  As some know, I was injured 3 years ago after inhaling poisonous fumes which burned my lungs and vocal cords.  Since that time, I managed to make ends meet on worker’s comp and a supplemental part-time job as a website administrator.  The worker’s comp benefits expired in March.  About that same time, I noticed my eyesight failing, particularly my left eye.  With low funds, I procrastinated scheduling a doctor’s appointment.  Recently, while driving, I noticed I could not even see other vehicles out of my left eye.  I could no longer deny the magnitude of the problem.  It was dangerous now.

I contacted Catholic Social Services last week.  They guided me to a wonderful local clinic who, after screening my financials, agreed to see me for no charge.  The news was not good.   I am currently completely blind in my left eye and my right eye has only 40% vision and is rapidly deteriorating. I was told the long term use of steroids I was prescribed for my inhalation injury (and later for Bells Palsy that I developed last year) were the contributing cause. They referred me to a local surgeon for cataract surgery and strongly encouraged me to not delay the treatment.  The cost for the initial visit is $165 and I was told to expect the surgery to cost approximately $2,000 - $2,500 per eye.  (I will have an exact figure after my initial visit with the surgeon.)

Further, after benefits expired, I could no longer afford to keep my home.  Thanks to the grace of my kids, a good friend and the owner of the aforementioned website, they’ve made sure I had a roof over my head.  At times I was staying with them, other times I’ve been in a hotel.   I will forever be grateful for their generosity.  My family’s resources have reached their limit. I desperately need to return to independence and a stable home.  I need my eyesight to be able to work to afford to support myself.  I’m estimating $1,700 to cover apartment & utility deposits and first month's rent to secure an affordable apartment.

Breathing is one of the many things in life that we all take for granted. Good health and sight are two more. I never envisioned a time where I would be contemplating what life would be like if I could not see. It’s scary.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and considering donating to my need.  God bless.
