Our dear friend Spiridon Caragiorgos was a true lover of God. He spent most of life in search of the Divine. At age 18 he moved from Megara Greece to New York City. He studied math and education and taught at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox school for 25 years. He was also a volunteer paramedic. He was never married and has no children. He lived his life much like a monastic in constant search for God and in service to humanity.
Divine Mother was dear to his heart and he spoke of Her often. He found the Self-Realization Fellowship path and was a practicing kriyaban since 2006. In 2015 he moved to Tampa Florida to live near the Tampa Bay Meditation Group. He wanted nothing more than to serve Paramahansa Yogananda’s work. He attended Thursdays and Sunday services and served regularly as a service reader and greeter. And, in his last year of life, he served as the Tampa Bay Meditation Group secretary. He maintained close relations to several monastics in the order including Brother Ishtananda and Brahmachari Cristos.
His passing came very suddenly and unexpectedly. On December 15th 2018, he was found deceased by police in his home and was said to have passed due to “natural causes”. He was in a reclining position on a meditation cushion on his sofa with eyes closed and earplugs in his ears.
He has no family in the US. His Mother and siblings live in Greece and are in need of financial assistance to bring his body back to Greece for burial.
His mother is near 80 years old and in poor health, with his sister as her caretaker, they struggle financially. Losing their son and brother at the young age of 55 has been profoundly difficult for the family.
I started this gofundme mainly to cover the cost of his body transportation and funeral costs. However any help for his family to get through this very difficult time will be greatly appreciated.
