NC Educators Working Against Racism

Donation protected
I see my students struggling with racism and poverty daily.  I want to learn more about their experiences so that I can understand ways to help them achieve their dreams.  –Jessica Benton, Special Education Teacher

Here’s what we know as public school teachers in North Carolina.

First and foremost, we love public schools.

Second, we know that public schools are imperfect, and do in fact frequently fail our children, especially children of color and children in poverty.

Third, we also know that supporters of public schools sometimes don’t own up to these failings of the public school system, which can lead to distrust from communities whose children are not well served.

Organize 2020, the social justice caucus of NCAE (North Carolina of Educators) is committed to playing a leading role in the fight against racism and economic injustice in our public school system.  This is a fight we need to win for the future of public schools and the future of our children.

That’s why Organize 2020 is partnering with Dismantling Racism Works, a NC based training collaborative with over 30 years of experience supporting race equity efforts, to offer a series of trainings to a group of 30 NC educators who are committed to leading this crucial fight.  Our end goal is to develop a strong, multi-racial team of leaders who share a common language and practice to anchor our commitment to race and economic equity in our schools and society.

I am excited to attend the Organize 2020 Dismantling Racism workshops.  Oftentimes race and racism can be a difficult conversation for educators.  This training will allow a safe place for educators to come together, discuss, and self-evaluate.  –Lyn Monroe Carter,  Elementary School Instructional Assistant

This very important work has a price tag.  We are asking 30 educators to devote four Saturdays and, in some cases, drive across state for these trainings.  We want to offer travel compensation, food, and childcare for these dedicated leaders. The good news is that the trainers at Dismantling Racism Works are offering their expertise and materials at a deeply discounted rate, so our goal for this first round is to raise $3000 for the start of a three-year program.

This leadership development work is central to our efforts to build a movement to support NC public schools so that ALL our children and communities receive the education that they both deserve and we need them to have.

Please give to this campaign. We’re looking for two lead gifts of $300, four gifts of $200, 10 gifts of $100, 10 gifts of $50, and 10 gifts of $10 or less. Anything you can offer—from $5 to $1000--will help us reach our goal. Thanks for your support.
