Cara-Joy is that rare combination of internal and external grace and beauty. If the lilt of her Kiwi accent doesn't get you, her big round eyes will. But the size of her eyes is nothing compared to that of her heart. She is a friend, an artist and a true bon vivant, and it’s safe to say the world would be less colorful place without her.
On the afternoon of October 18th, Cara-Joy had just dropped off her boyfriend at the Midland airport and was trying to navigate in unfamiliar territory. After missing a stop sign, she was struck by a fast-moving 18-wheeler. EMS transported her to MHM in Odessa, but her injuries were so extensive she was quickly airlifted to Lubbock, where she is currently listed in stable condition, though her prognosis remains unknown.
Her injuries are numerous and severe. A broken hip. A broken arm. Injuries to her spleen and bladder. Hemorrhaging on the brain. Despite all this, those who know her best remain hopeful for her recovery. She is a tough girl - not a quitter. Still, she has many surgeries and much time in the hospital ahead of her. The recovery will be long and arduous.
Her family is en route from New Zealand and Michigan and Rob is by her side, as well as two of her dearest Marfa friends. Having her loved ones nearby is the most important thing right now, of course. But she will soon need support in other ways, so we are asking that you please consider making a small donation to aid in Cara-Joy's recovery, and that you keep her in your thoughts and prayers today, tomorrow and beyond.
As one the friends by her side said, "She is very strong. Despite how bad the accident was, she still looks so incredibly beautiful. I just wish she would open her pretty little eyes."
