Planting Hope in Camden

Tax deductible
WHO WE ARE The Center for Environmental Transformation (CFET) in Camden, New Jersey engages, educates, and inspires people to practice a more environmentally responsible way of living on the planet.

OUR STORY Over the summer of 2015, soil scientists from the USDA - Natural Resources Conservation  Service visited our garden sites in order to test our soil for possible toxic contaminants. Arsenic treated wood was found bordering our garden beds in Liney Ditch Park. To prevent a potential contamination issue, CFET decided to remove the suspect wood. The wood removal process was extremely labor intensive as it involved trenching 4 feet below the soil. This project began on September 19th, 2015 and was completed on December 12th, 2015 with the help of numerous volunteers.

The site was now ready for the next step – restoring and rejuvenating the soil with nutrient rich compost. The organic matter in the compost would stabilize any Arsenic that found its way into the soil during the wood removal process. Supporting us in this stage of the project was Cherry Hill Township's Public Works Department, who donated a full dump truck load of leaf
compost as well as the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority (CCMUA) who provided us with the free delivery.

On January 18, for Martin Luther King Day, 36 volunteers from Rutgers University-Camden and Food Corps NJ helped to cover the garden with the entire dump truck sized load of compost. Congressman Donald Norcross even attended and helped to shovel and move wheelbarrows full of leaf compost.

HOW YOU CAN HELP Now, the fun begins! With your help, the renewed Liney Ditch Park will have 66 raised beds, a pollinator garden, a storage site, compost bins, a seating area, and a school garden for the children of Sacred Heart School. The renewed space will be used as a teaching garden for the youth in our leadership and job training programs as well as for the many volunteers that give their time to CFET.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 immediately so that we can build 66 raised beds next month (April).
