“C” IS FOR CANCER; COLON CANCER

Just like others, we never thought cancer would become the focal point of our lives.  And the far reaching effects are frightening.  If it weren’t for the strength of this amazing family, I don’t know how we would be able to cope.  Shelly, my amazing son-in-law, despite the fact that he is staring adversity in the face, continues with a strength unimaginable; not just for himself but for the rest of his family.  It hurts to see him in this state, but I feel with all my heart that if anyone can beat this, Shelly will.  And Jenn, my loving daughter (and Shelly’s sidekick) continues to astound us all with her positive outlook and devotion to her husband.

I am so thankful that after twenty years of marriage and two sons (Alex and Reece), Shelly and Jenn are still braced to face the future together, whatever that future holds.  I don’t know which one is the stronger one; all I know is that they give continuous love and support to each other and to my beautiful grandsons Alex and Reece.  They are a rock for one another.  What they impart to our entire family is beyond anything this mother could hope for.  Honestly, we are all more like friends than family.  We trust each other; we rely on each other, we love each other without conditions.

Shelly, Jenn and so many others in our family have been hard working, self-sufficient and determined to make our own way in life.  But now the situation has changed. Cancer has entered Shelly’s life and is strongly impacting the lives of those we love most.  We need each other now more than we’ve ever needed anyone.  With a great degree of discomfort and sadness, we reluctantly admit that we also now need the help of others.

We have always been drawn to small, family-type companies that exude the same values nurtured within our own family. The downside of this allure to smaller companies is that healthcare is not an option for us.  It’s either far too costly or simply not available, the stark situation for so many millions of other middle class families in America.  Even though we pride ourselves on being productive members of society, healthcare is just not financially within our grasp.  To this point in our lives, we have been blessed with good health, making the need for health coverage an unimportant expense.  But that too has changed with escalating costs of radiation and chemo that Shelly is about to endure.

As much as our family can financially contribute, we will, but I appeal to all of you who are willing and able to help us.  Whether you contribute financially, in thought, deed or prayer, it will all be humbly appreciated.  Thank you to everyone for whatever and however you can support us in this situation.
