How do you quantify someone's needs when they have so little?

He's a hard working, honest person with his moral compass pointed in the right direction. He's the kind of guy that doesn't ask for anything and appreciates everything.

I'm going to give it to God and not move the goal anymore. I'm going to let you guys be in control of this amazing gift!

Shelby Hudgens is a man with a heart of gold!  After a fire in November left him homeless he moved to Colorado Springs for a fresh start and hope of finding a job.  He is currently living out of his car and while at the intersection of Fillmore and I-25 he noticed people in need.  He spent hours Saturday night, in the cold, helping push people up the hill.  I am hoping to set this account up for him to show him a little bit of the grace he showed our community the other night.

Sorry for the delay in posting an update, I've been sick and haven't been able to get together with Shelby until today.

His ss card finally came in which means he will be able to start the training for work tomorrow.

He has a few applications out to rent a little place and is just waiting for the final answers.

He's out of the elements, eating well and looking forward to his new job and future!

Everyone who donated literally helped change his life. He has a fresh start with so much to look forward to in the future.

Thank you for showing me how amazing people can be! Some believe you can't change the world, but I beg to differ! We came together and changed his world!

I talked to Shelby today. He amazes me every single time I talk to him. He got the first deposit in his account today and is going to seek professional help in finding a place to live. He listened to everyone's comments and concerns about a trailer being a bad investment and he really just wants to make people proud and do the right thing with this amazing blessing. He told me that he wants to do the best with what he's been given.

I started out last week trying to help a stranger and it has turned into so much more! I consider myself lucky to call him a friend! I stand by my update that stated that you all have helped the most deserving, kindest and amazing good hearted soul ever!!!

I will keep everyone updated!

Update 7

When I first started this gofundme, I had the goal set at $5000. A dream I couldn't imagine us ever hitting. This morning we have just passed that goal and I can't believe it! You ALL have been so generous!
I've struggled with the goal setting as many of you have noticed, changing it on a daily basis.

I had a conversation with Shelby where he explained to me some of his hopes for this life changing support.

He said he would like to get a local ID so that he can go and get his ss card and birth certificate that were lost in the fire.

Shelter! He would love to be able to rent an apartment that would accept his dog blackjack. He was hoping that once he had an address it would help him get a job where he could continue to support himself.

He has a passion for working in the medical field and was so excited when the goal was enough to prepay a couple of months rent and be able to pay for the CNA class and state testing!

He loves working in the medical field.

His large scale life goals are to continue his schooling so that he can eventually work in the mental and behavioral health field.

He has a few smaller needs, like fixing his car (the oil leaks out, the tire goes flat everyday and it doesn't always start like it should). Since it was his shelter and warmth, it does concern him that it's having problems...he worries about another cold night out in it.

His needs are basic and his goals logical and attainable. He has a good head on his shoulders and a vision of where he's going and what needs to happen to get there.

Thank you all so much! Seriously! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this dream a reality!

Shelby I am touched by your kindness for others and you deserve a home out off the streets. my advice on the money is to ask your local home realtors if there are any rent to own homes available or just lease an apartment for 1 year at a time. God Bless You.

I'm glad you're getting advice from many people on buying trailer vs renting etc.. I'm not sure how expensive rent is where you live but for me my $900 1 bedroom apartment in Miami is cheaper than if I owed a tiny home. $900 in rent is money you will never get back but it includes power bill ( think AC on 24/7 360 days a year) Now if I were to pay home owners insurance, taxes in Miami, and a power bill, ( not including home repairs ) it would also be money I will never get back and it would cost more than the $900 i pay a month in rent. So buy vs own is going to depend on where you will loose more money monthly that you won't get back. Also you just moved. I think your best bet is to get an apartment with a 6, 9 or 12 month lease, decide if you really like where you live and find a good job ect... then decide if you want to buy a home, but i recomend waiting at least a year before diving into home ownership. If you own you also can't up and leave if you want to check out a new state, perhaps a warmer place, or fall in love with someone that lives far away and you want to move where they are. I'm 36 and still dont want to be tied down to a house. :) I may want to check out Cali or Hawaii someday. Try not to aquire too many posessions until you are in a place where you really want to settle down, it makes moving easier :P Thats the best advice I can give personally. I wish you the best of luck with your decisions :)

My son posted Shelby's story on his facebook page, and it brought back a flood of memories from when my son was just a youngster, and tears came without warning. When my son was a little guy of about 4, I'd often load him into his carseat, stick a juicebox and a sandwich in his hand, and off we'd go to run errands. First stop was the remote post office box building, where we encountered a homeless man sleeping underneath the rubber-backed floor mat. Knowing that within a few minutes the building would have a steady flow of people checking their mail, I decided to gently wake the man, and to help him 'get on his way' before the rush. As I got my son loaded back into his carseat, he yelled "HERE!" as he held out what was left of his sandwich and juicebox. "HE'S HUNGRY!", yelled my son as he saw the man emerge from the building - "GIVE HIM IT! HURRY, GIVE HIM IT!" he continued to yell at me until I had successfully given it to the man, who, through teary eyes and a mostly-toothless smile, raised the juicebox toward my son and toasted him saying, "Thank you, little man. May you continue to love others without even knowing them." My son didn't understand then what the toast meant, but I did, and I shared the same hope for him. And now, some 18-years later, my son continues to be a person filled with love and compassion, especially for those who have the least, but who give the most - like the great Shelby Hudgens.

Was hoping to see a pic of him and his dog together. Love the photo! Ya don't get a trailer. Get a nice little 1 bedroom apartment that allows dogs. If you can score a small guest house, or stand alone house ( the kind rich people have in the back of their property for inlaws ) its the best because you don't share walls ( noise ) with anyone :) craigs list search key words " cottage, stand alone, free standing, guest house, in laws quarters " good luck!
