Myanmar Pink Headed Duck 2017

PARA LA VERSIÓN EN ESPAŇOL LEER MÁS ABAJO

My name is John Hodges, I'm 49yrs old and a freelance writer and wildlife photographer. In early November 2017 I will be joining an expedition to remote and unexplored regions of Northern Myanmar (Burma) in search to rediscover the iconic species, the Pink Head Duck. This species is currently listed by the IUCN as
critically endangered and has not been seen officially since the 50's. However along with expedition leader Richard Thorns and writer/author /painter and internationally recognised expert in endangered species Errol Fuller we have permission to explore and record the biodiversity in areas new to science and hopefully discover a remnant population of this beautiful duck.

In recent years Richard Thorns has made several, single handed expedition collecting data and recent and credible eyewitness accounts. Many in the ornithological community agree that of all missing species of bird in the World, the Pink-Headed Duck has the greatest chance to be still hanging on in a remote waterway, pond, lake or river in Myanmar. This expedition is the first team effort to find this enigmatic and extraordinary bird.

My partner Pilar Bueno and I are responsible for the filming and photography for the expedition. As a naturalist and wildlife photographer, this is a dream come true. Not only is it a chance to make a small piece of history but more importantly a real opportunity to help preserve the important and unknown habitats of Myanmar and all the wonders that lay within.

If we can find the PHDuck or any new species of which I'm sure there are many we can help the Myanmar Government protect the areas from international agriculture, mining and logging corporations.

Myanmar has only just opened up to the World after decades of internal conflict. The window of opportunity for new discovery is small.
We are all self-funded and any financial help will be very gratefully received to help fund our expenses for travel, accommodation and equipment.

We would really like to have funds to expand our search into neighbouring countries such as Northern India and N. Thailand. My partner and I intend to be in the field for over three hot and humid months.

Ideally, we'd like to have many camera traps laid out in suitable habitats to capture the movement of all species in the areas being surveyed. This would free our time to be able to explore more freely and cover more ground. This is where the majority of any funding would be spent aside for the travel expenses.

As a naturalist, my heart breaks when I see how fast we are losing the planet habitats and biodiversity. The difference I see in my brief time here is shocking.
My dream as a boy was to be able to really make a difference, to help protect our planet for future generations.

I've been inspired by the natural world all my life, Sir David Attenborough is my hero and an inspiration to follow my dreams. Unfortunately, since Attenborough started his career the planet and all species on it has become an endangered organism. This opportunity presented here is almost unique in our time. Even if we do not find this missing species the chances of new species is very high. Myanmar's habitat in places is like a time capsule but the threats are great.

Maybe, just maybe a headline-grabbing discovery will help conserve and protect this amazing country from the environmental exploitation that is all too common in the headlines of our media.

I thank you all in advance for any donations. I will add the names of all contributors in the credits for the coming book from our travels if you send me the receipt for your donations.

Please feel free to contact me and I hope I can answer all your queries.

Thank you sincerely for your time
Regards
John Hodges

Saludos
John Hodges
