Celebration of Life luncheon to follow

First off, it is very difficult for me to create an account like this but I'm overwhelmed and am in dire need of help. I've always thought Go FundMe accounts were wonderful to help those in need and for the community to come together. I just never thought I would need to create one myself for a loved one. But I have sadly learned all too well that life has no guarantees. It has only been 6 years since I lost my 25 year old brother Clint.

My Dad, Richie went to the hospital July 13, 2017 after experiencing excessive coughing and trouble breathing. A cat scan was performed and showed a large mass in his lung that has metastasized to his colon, liver, and bones. The diagnoses is Stage 4 Lung Cancer with less than a 2% survival rate. We follow up with the oncologist this week but have already been told chemotherapy is not curative. When I asked the doctor just how bad it really was, he said, "It's everywhere." My Dad is 61 years old and unable to work now. He's in moderate pain that his oncologist will work on managing. My Dad has always had a caring heart and was unsure about me creating a page like this. But I know he needs help and will appreciate it if we are able to ease some of his worries. My Dad planned on retiring in just a few months and had many plans to travel, spend time with family and friends, and relax while enjoying retirement. This sadly, and very abruptly, has been cut short which he is struggling with on top of depression and anxiety.

Funds will be used for living expenses, medical costs that insurance does not cover, and a short bucket list my dad is creating like visiting his childhood friends in Delaware and going to Colorado. Remaining funds will be used for funeral expenses.

Every little bit helps, even sharing this page helps. If funds are an issue and you'd like to still help, please provide prayers to ease his suffering and provide comfort. Thank you very much for your support. I am truly grateful from the bottom of my heart.

I will post updates on the Go FundMe account and also CaringBridge.

My father was re-admitted to the hospital on Friday the 21st after having a massive panic attack and sharp pains on his side. After lab testing, doctors learned his liver enzymes have doubled in less than a week and he was in a lot of pain he couldn't manage at home. After speaking with several doctors, and Hospice, we learned that the cancer around the liver is spreading rapidly and now getting the brain cancer under control with radiation is no longer a priority. There is no treatment available with his poor health for the lung cancer. Hospice said if he enters now, they can manage the pain and give him a quality of life but if he wait, the cancer may get so bad and we'd risk not getting ahead of the pain. We chose Hospice. Although, his six month life expectancy has now changed to just a few weeks. He's at home with me and resting. He will start seeing visitors but I ask his friends, and mine as well, to reach out to me before they want to come. My Dad's sister will be flying out from Florida next Wednesday to help. I am so grateful for all the support and prayers. Please keep praying for his comfort. Thank you.

Yesterday, my Dad and I went to the oncologist. Although there is a mass in his lung, there is an excessive amount of cancer surrounding his liver. The Dr. is most concerned with the cancer that has traveled to his brain. He began his first round of radiation today and will do one treatment a day for a total of ten days. My dad is in discomfort in his liver and is sleeping often and not eating much. They have him started on a steroid in hopes it will bring back some of his energy. His memory has been a bit off due to the brain cancer. I purchased a walker for him today and received a prescription for a wheelchair which I'll get this week. He's having trouble catching his breath but his oxygen levels are good and the Dr. told him to increase the use of his inhaler. Many of my Dad's friends are reaching out to me so I will encourage them all to follow this page. Unfortunately, due to my father's health, it is difficult for him to call each and every one of you that would like to speak with him. I let him know he has a lot of support and he appreciates it, as do I. I am truly grateful for all the prayers and the support on the Go Fund Me account.

After radiation, my father will be tested to see if he's a candidate for a non chemo treatment which is pill form. This has less side effects and may shrink the cancer giving him better quality of life. With ZERO treatment, the doctor said his life expectancy is 2 months. With treatment, he's looking at up to six months. My father will be moving in with me this weekend and my mom and I are working on getting his room set up and be a place of comfort. I applied him for the Dream Foundation today - his dream is to go to Alaska. We will hear back from them in 2-3 weeks.

I'll do my best to post updates as I can. I'm exhausted and running on fumes. But there's a lot going on and it's important that I'm there. It hasn't even been a week since we got the news. It's a lot my father is going through and I ask please to continue to pray. Thank you for your love and support.

**Update** my father and I are to see the oncologist this afternoon (7/18). However, this appointment may get pushed back if the biopsy results are not in from his hospital stay last week. Yesterday, he went to his doctor to read MRI scans done on his brain a couple weeks ago. The MRI scan was performed for a separate health issue before we even knew about the cancer but we have now learned the cancer has spread to his brain. We are working on going back to Delaware in two weeks so he can see his childhood friends. But we are at a standstill of what to do next until we speak with the oncologist and discuss the plan. I'm overwhelmed and beyond grateful for the outpouring of love and support. I am currently handling all calls and texts for my Dad as best I can. He's feeling a little weak and tired right now and it's difficult for him to talk to so many people. You may Follow his story at Caring Bridge: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/richardmchale
