Music with Refugees by Shai Shriki
In August 2018 Shai Shriki visited Lesvos, Greece refugee camps to start a music project
and donated musical instruments to the refugees he met. It was a life changing experience!
The amount of beauty and hardship he came across was absolutely incredible and inspiring.
That was the first stage of the vision Shai have been working on in the past two years.
Shai’s experiance showed him the reality of living condition, the amount of laughter,
cry, musical experiences and new friendships he made.
This is an opportunity for Shai to share my experiences and an invitation for you to be a part
of it. ‘ Refugees are not a world problem... It’s some people’s reality. ’
Many people around the world are in an unfortunate situation where they have had to leave
their homes, countries and family to escape into the unknown.
Now they are living in makeshift camps with no future, not much to do, and only basic
humanitarian needs. While the struggle for basic needs like shelter and food is a big issue in
the camps, we must remember that life goes on. With that in mind, music and culture are
basic forms of human connection and joy.
Message from Shai: ‘ Music can change someones day and turn it from hardship
with depression to hardship with hope ’
At this stage I’m going for my first trip to the refugee camps in Greece to find and meet the
musicians who are living there. I’ll be travelling with a camera man to make a documentary film
about the process, create some music together, hear people’s stories, play music and share it
with the world. In the future i would like to give them some instruments and make a music
program. My intention is to put a smile on people’s faces and get the musicians
in the camps inspired to keep the music alive while maintaining culture and passing it on to
future generations. The documentary film i’m creating will bring the stories of the people to
life and you will be getting a better idea of their situation. In the past year and a half I
have been donating money I have earned from concerts, passing around donation buckets,
taking casual donations from my community as well as contributing a portion of ticket sales
from the latest ‘Zorba Gypsy Party’ in Byron Shire.
Get on board and help me donate many more instruments, creat concerts and a documentary to humanis this story. Yes there’s lots of beauty there as much as hardship. Help me and my camera man get to Greece and continue this ongoing program this July.
This will be the second of many trips and your help is key in putting a smile on people’s
faces.
