Mumford High School Wrestling

Please help support the Mumford High School Wrestling Team in Detroit for the 2017-18 season and beyond. The Mumford wrestling team is entering its fourth season as a team and is the only school in the entire Detroit Public Schools Community District to offer the sport. While we relish in being pioneers of wrestling in the city of Detroit, with that comes many challenges. Because the sport is not offered at any other school in DPSCD, the district's policy is to not offer any financial support, whatsoever. This is different from previous years where we had uniforms and transportation covered by our former district as well as a coaching stipend which was used mostly to cover the cost of feeding the team during weekend tournaments.

We had a tremendous amount of support last year which helped cover all expenses for the team for the season, including hotel and food costs for our first-ever all-state wrestler during his postseason run. Much is still needed, however, to continue the Mumford wrestling team on its path to greatness. We hope to outfit a state-of-the-art wrestling room and purchase a scorer's clock for home competitions this year to name a few of the larger expenses. There are also the little things like replacing broken headgear and buying more singlets for our ever growing team which we hope to cover with your generous donations.

Every little bit helps and is sincerely appreciated by the Mumford Wrestling team. In Detroit we have to face some challenges that our competition often doesn't, financial and otherwise. We are stronger for it, and by having you in our corner. Thank you for making a big difference in the lives of this special group of Detroit teenagers.
Team History:
Coach Peter Cunningham started the Mumford Wrestling Team during the 2014-15 season and had just one wrestler compete with no wins. Mumford had its first All-State wrestler in 2017 when Kemonte Simons reached the MHSAA Division 2  semifinals and finished in 4th place. Kemonte is now wrestling collegiately at Cleary University.

Wrestling is not a sport that schools in Detroit traditionally offer. In fact, Mumford is the only school in the 50,100 student Detroit Public Schools Community District, the state's largest, to offer wrestling. For years, people uneducated about wrestling supposedly tried to keep it out of the city’s schools because they thought it was too violent. The MHS wrestlers disprove this ignorance by serving as unofficial ambassadors for the city and the sport at every competition they attend. Opposing teams are surprised and excited to see the sport finally growing in Detroit. The discipline, sportsmanship, and perseverance that wrestling teaches is helping our students.

Thank yous:
We were able to raise more than $8,000 last year thanks to the generosity of so many. Prestigous Mumford alumnus and ESPN star Jemele Hill deserves a special thanks for her incredible support. Also, Detroit Free Press sportswriter Nick Baumgardner and Brendan Quinn of The Athletic deserve a special thanks for promoting the fundraiser through their podcast. Their listeners rallied behind us in droves and it was incredible. Thank you. Because of everyone's generosity, we are in a position to enter all of our tournaments for this season and buy the team shirts and shorts.

If you would like to get involved in any way, get a copy of our competition schedule, or find out about purchasing team gear, etc., please contact coach Peter Cunningham at [email redacted] or [phone redacted].
