Mullein Hill Farmstead Studio: Contemporary Problem Solving - Artistic Exploration

Mullein Hill Farmstead Studio has been a goal since moving back to the Virginia countryside with my family. During my time away I was able to distill what it was I found most enriching about the rural experience and how connections between farm life and art making offer us a new way of addressing some very important issues. One step in this journey was to integrate the rhythms of family, farm work, and studio practice. Another important goal was to pursue my Masters of Art in Teaching. I am realizing these goals and believe they are the foundation for Mullein Hill.
Mullein Hill will be a place for research and education. Contemporary art asks that we understand the role of the artist in a more expansive light. Through social practice and a sensitive eye artists are addressing issues that affect us all. I appreciate the way Andrew Simonet illustrates the role of art in our culture:
“The scientific method works on material questions. The artistic process works on questions of culture, questions of thought. And today, especially in the 'developed world' many of our toughest problems are questions of thought and culture.”
Our future will have its course corrected by a marriage of art and science. Our planet needs nourishment and awaits the energy and innovation of those with a creative mind and a knowledge of how a farm functions. I hope Mullein Hill can be a place to bring these ideas together in the minds of young people.
Funds From this collection will be directed toward start-up costs and supplies for farm and classroom. Doors will open this summer. Programs will be offered during the summer and weekends with extended programs starting in 2017.
Through my dedication, and your generous contribution, Mullein Hill will facilitate discovery and foster creativity.
