· Goal – The Lisbon Parks & Recreation Department, with fundraising support from Positive Change Lisbon is working with a group of motivated parents to purchase and install a high quality, handicap accessible, creative playground at the MTM Community Center on School Street in Lisbon, Maine.
· History – The MTM Recreation center has seen amazing growth in physical improvements and recreational usage since beginning operation in 2004. The annual number of programs, events and visitors to the center continues to climb each year. In 2009 the Lisbon Concerts in the Park were started and in 2010 Positive Change Lisbon coordinated the fundraising for and construction of the Pavilion Stage. The activities of the Rec Department, and PCL, are bringing thousands of people to MTM Park each year.
· Need – The current MTM playground is old, rusty and in need of replacing. Playground facilities have been proven to provide a community with a number of documented benefits. We have attached a “Benefits of Play” sheet for you to review at your convenience. We feel very strongly that we need to invest in our children and our community by installing a high quality playground in this vibrant park, to bring families together and help our children grow. Currently, neighboring communities are attracting our young families to their quality playgrounds. We need to keep those families here.
· Financials – We have met with representatives from playground equipment companies and discussed our available space and needs. We have determined that a playground similar to the photo attached, which will best meet our community needs, will cost approximately $50,000.00. This could possibly be reduced with the use of volunteer labor by doing a “Community Installation”.
Progress - Knowing that this project needs to be a joint effort of the town and the citizens, PCL approached the Town Council and requested a $20,000 investment towards the project. On April 25, the Town Council Workshop approved this request and there will be a formal vote at the Council Meeting on May 2nd. Additionally, we have been gifted a major donation from a local citizen in the amount of $16,000. These funds, along with other substantial donations, currently place our total raised value at $39,500.
Community Progress– We feel that our community has taken several steps forward in recent years. The walking trail is renowned as a highlight of the region, the new High School Gym and track are attracting regional athletes and the upcoming improvements to RTE 196 will begin to create an improved sense of place in Lisbon that will attract visitors and residents. We need to create a place in town for families to gather and connect.
