Mr. Verdis Johnson (Mr. J) has been the loyal, dedicated custodian at Normal Park Museum Magnet lower school for over 15 years. I first met Mr. J back in 2003 when I began working as NPMM's parent coordinator. Anytime I asked (and often when I didn't) he was right by my side setting up for an event, helping me move supplies or desks or pieces of the kindergarten float, and letting me dig into his cleaning supply closet for the occasional broom. His quiet demeanor, gentle nature, and consistent presence has played an important role in our school family. He has always done his best to make our very old school building shine and takes pride in his work.
Early this morning, December 7, 2015, Mr. J was unexpectedly shot by a masked gunman as he left his home in East Ridge for work. He suffered injury to his hand and abdomen. His biggest worry is of course his medical bill as he is the primary provider for his wife and family. Mr. J is father to six children (several who attended NPMM) and grandfather to 21.
Please consider a donation to this GoFundMe site to support Mr. J, his family, and the bills he will incur due to this tragic incident. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he makes a strong recovery.
Once fully funded, we will help Mr. J directly pay his medical bills. Thank you NPMM family for your kind consideration and support!
