Mr. Pennell’s Surprise Trip of a Lifetime

$12,305 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 165 people in 1 month
Created March 31, 2019
Mr. Gary Pennell is retiring after inspiring Collegedale Academy’s young people to become informed and involved United States citizens for the past 29 years. He has been a steadfast presence at CA throughout his tenure and has taught World History, US History, Economics, Government, and Great Books. Each year, he’s managed to engage and captivate students in the classroom, but has also found ways to connect with his students as individuals. Mr. Pennell’s passion for teaching and excellence is palpable, and it is reflected in the many lives he has impacted throughout his teaching career.

At the NAD Teacher’s Convention last August, it was discovered in a casual conversation that Mr. Pennell has never been to Europe. Giving him and his wife Janet the trip of a lifetime as a send-off into retirement would be fitting for a man that has devoted his life to the thousands of students he has helped prepare for adulthood and higher education. In passing, Mr. Pennell expressed that he would feel most comfortable going to Europe if accompanied by his dear friend and colleague Mr. Michael Peel and Mr. Peel’s wife, Lisa, as his tour guides. Any funds raised will support all four of them on their grand adventure.

Mr. Pennell is completely unaware that this fundraising project is taking place, but he is not on social media, so it shouldn’t be difficult to keep it a surprise.

All contributions donated will be given to Mr. Pennell at the end of the CA school year. The time and date of presenting the funds will be determined as the end of the school year approaches.

Thank you for your support and generosity!

**Mr. Pennell also spent 5 years at Forest Lake Education Center (affiliated with Forest Lake Academy) and 3 years at Broadview Academy, so please share with anyone you know that may have had Mr. Pennell as a teacher throughout the years.

We have reached a huge milestone is our project to honor Mr. Pennell, and it's time to celebrate! Mandy Picchiottino has graciously organized a gathering this Thursday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m. at Provino's Italian Restaurant in Chattanooga. His surprise trip and all of the tributes written on the page will be unveiled at that time. (His reaction will be recorded and shared!) Many of us are not able to be there to celebrate with him in person, so we hope that those of you who are able to attend will seize on this opportunity to honor this incredible man and his life's work. A reservation for 25 has been made, so please email Natalie (Richards) Hood at natalie.m.hood@gmail.com so that a headcount can be given to Mandy and proper accommodations made if the number increases beyond that. Thank you so much!
