Over the holiday break my wife and I admitted to each other that we gave out a lot of cash to homeless folks in downtown Minneapolis. We were going through a nasty cold snap and it was the holidays. After a lengthy discussion about whether we made any difference in their lives, were we helping or hurting, we decided we didn't care, we just felt really good for trying to help and give.
We decided to do some analysis and have some conversations with folks about what is really missing, and how we can really help. The unifying theme that we ended up coming up with was that there was little if anything to do during the day for the homeless in downtown Minneapolis.
We propose to create a community space for the many cold/hungry homeless folks who wander the skyways and streets of Minneapolis.
We think it would be cool to have a safe and secure place to hang out, play ping pong, backgammon, chess, dominos, cards, board games and all kinds of fun activities. So much room for activities!
We could provide a hot shower, a shave, and a haircut, and have washing machines and dryers available. Maybe some nice terry cloth robes to wear while waiting on their clothes.
We would have a good meal available and some nice couches and chairs for general hanging out. This would be cool, and you would be cool too for donating. We would offer access to counseling–job, chemical, and mental health–but but will be chill about it. We could potentially offer access to health care resources and even partner with other charitable organizations or resource providers around town.
We will need truckloads of money for real estate, legal advice, and insurance, lots of insurance.
We are the Lee Family and we have been very fortunate and we like to help folks, it gives us all the feels.

It would mean a lot to us to create a non-profit organization (complete :: http://www.thedropin.org/ ) that creates an environment that is conducive to safe, non-judgmental hanging out activities, and unfettered access to services that help those in need.
