In honor of my beloved late father, radio pioneer Johnny Morris, we are laying down the foundation for the Morris Broadcast Academy, a place for teens and young adults to learn the ins and outs of hosting, producing and engineering radio shows and podcasts. The goal of the program is to encourage students to further their education in the areas of broadcast and digital media while underscoring the importance of diverse, informed voices across the ever-changing radio landscape.
I'm proud to say my dad's passion for radio broadcasting made him a natural teacher of the trade and a valued mentor to many for decades. In addition to building Morris Media Studios, it was our joint vision to include a learning space for him and other dedicated radio professionals to share their extensive knowledge of broadcasting. MBA will be that dream come to life.
The funds raised during Phase One of this campaign will go toward MBA's initial start-up costs, such as:
- 501c3 fees
- Insurance
- Studio equipment upgrades
- Classroom space
- Supplies
Morris Broadcast Academy will be housed within Morris Media Studios, located in the Leimert Park/Crenshaw area of Los Angeles. Students will follow a six-to-eight week curriculum and receive hands-on training. We are planning to commence on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, the date that would have been my father's 71st birthday. Today, we launch this fundraising campaign in the spirit of his lasting legacy, one of integrity, brilliance and generosity.
