More Than Cancer: Jenny's Battle

Donation protected
I’m Jenny. I am 25 years old, the middle daughter of three girls. I live in and love Texas. I graduated from Texas Christian University with a Movement Science degree (Go Frogs!) and I have a Masters in Health and Exercise Science from Colorado State University. I work in corporate wellness as a Health Fitness Specialist for a company called EXOS, and I absolutely love my job. I played soccer in high school and recently started playing in a social flag football league with some friends from work. I like to go for walks and bake and watch MasterChef with my sister. I’m Jenny, and I also am a Cancer Warrior.

Five years ago (at 20 years old), I was diagnosed with Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma (FHC, aka Freak Health Concern) – a rare, mysterious cancer that I don’t recommend Googling. We have done a lot to fight it: I’ve had surgeries; I’ve tried chemo pills and chemo transfusions; I’ve been on clinical trials and have had multiple health care teams. (You can read details about my journey on my Caring Bridge page.) About two years ago, I was cancer-free for 14 good long months (to God be the glory!). But it came back. We tried something new, which didn’t work. Recently we ran DNA samples on my cancer genes, and guess what? God gave me incredible odds and mutated my genes in such a way that there is currently NO treatment available known to specifically target and destroy my cancer. None. Can you believe that? I’m left asking…now what?

Enter the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment. I heard about the center during a work conference that I chose to attend (was this a coincidence or did God put me there?). Their integrative approach to cancer treatment combines conventional treatment (chemo, radiation, surgery, etc.) with complementary therapies that address physical, nutritional, psychosocial, and spiritual aspects of healing and recovery. They look at individuals with cancer as a whole person rather than just a patient. It’s a new approach that I haven’t tried, and I feel God is leading me to the Block Center. Fight cancer from every possible angle? Count me in! The Block Center sounds great. The Block Center sounds… expensive. And the Block Center [mostly] does not take insurance. I’m 25. I haven’t quite sufficiently built up my “In Case of Emergency” fund to cover what this will entail.

Nonetheless, I am going to the Block Center. There’s no doubt in my mind that I will get there, that I will counsel with them, and that they will be effective in my Cancer Battle. But I need help. If God moves your heart (and your bank account) to support my funding for the Block Center, no matter how small or how big, please know that you ARE making a difference – not just for me, but for my family, for my friends, for my colleagues. YOU are making a difference, and I love you all.
