Sarah's 2017 Moonshot Fund

Donation protected
Thanks for visiting! In 2017, I've committed to completing my first Ironman and I want to make a difference for a cause I care about while I'm training.

Back in 2011 I applied to be part of Texas 4000 for Cancer , a non-profit associated with the University of Texas at Austin that raises funds toward cancer research and patient support programs across North America. In addition to raising funds, my team rode our bikes from Austin, TX to Anchorage, AK as a humble metaphor for the fight against cancer. Even on the toughest of days, cancer patients have no choice but to continue fighting. I drew on that strength during the summer of 2013 as I completed my journey with my Texas 4000 team. Our team went on to donate $325,000 to cancer research and support programs, and I gained a lifelong passion for completing endurance events while fundraising for a cause that I care so much about.

Like you, my life has been affected both positively and negatively by cancer. I've known many people that I train in honor of and in memory of who have battled cancer. I couldn't get through a grueling training program (shoutout to my sometimes-nice coach, Steve !!) and a trying race day without drawing on the strength of those in my cancer community, and especially those whose strength I have admired so much through their own fight.

Please consider donating to this fund. 100% of proceeds (less GoFundMe's 2.9% fee) will go to MD Anderson's Moonshot Program . MD Anderson is a cancer research and treatment hospital located in Houston, TX. I've known several people who have received treatment there and I feel strongly that funds donated to this institution do a wealth of good for the fight against cancer. Additionally, I feel passionately about donating to the Moonshot program because there is an incredible amount of promise in innovative treatment ideas, but there's not yet funding to match. Cancer can be cured in our lifetime, but only if researchers are willing and able to take risks, try new ideas, and ultimately build the treatments of the future. Raising $10,000 can support the lifecycle of an entire "moonshot" research project and could ultimately end up creating a new treatment for cancer that saves millions of lives. Be part of the cure with me and PLEASE send me encouragement through this training journey.

This campaign will close November 19, 2017 (aka: RACE DAY!) and a donation will be made within 4 business days for the entire amount raised to MD Anderson's Moonshot Program.  In addition to regular pleas for donations, I'll also be posting updates on training and my volunteer work in the San Francisco cancer community, where I'm currently based.
