College Dreams: College Visits for DC Students

Monument Academy students are dreaming of college!

Many youth, especially those living with profound trauma such as foster care involvement, homelessness or family removals, don’t always see opportunity and possibility in their future. Careers and college are not always part of the world they navigate or know, but at Monument Academy Public Charter school we seek to level the playing field for Washington DC’s most underserved youth by opening up horizons, including college visits. Risks they face include:

-30% at least one year over-age
-33% homeless
-50% receive special education services
-School mobility, attending an average of 2.2 schools prior to Monument

Last year, we raised over $8,000 through our GoFundMe campaign towards sending nearly 100 students on college visits. This year our goal is to raise $10,000 to cover the full cost of taking nearly 120 students on college visits. Over the past three years, they have visited local colleges area and out of state colleges, including Howard University, Georgetown University, and American University, Temple, Lincoln, University of Pennsylvania and Penn State. These visits are a transformational experience for our students, inspiring them to pursue a college degree.

While we cannot change these students’ past or current circumstances, we can help affect their futures by helping them envision positive goals and dreams.  Please help us make this difference by donating to support these college visits.
