Montréal Writes is an online literary magazine that features the creative works of local and international writers, poets, artists and photographers.
Since January 2018, Montréal Writes has served as an incubator of creative talents. The magazine has reached thousands across over 42 countries, and has garnered over 17,000 impressions on the publishing platform Issuu. Initially intended for writers and artists located in Montréal, the project has since expanded due to popular demand and now publishes works from artists around the world, including Québec City, Toronto, California, England and Brazil.
The publication of works from various artists has also enabled a platform where mutual dialogue and critical engagement on some of the most pervasive sociopolitical issues in the media can thrive. To celebrate International Women’s Day this past March, Montréal Writes published a special issue that celebrated female empowerment. The (Women’s) March issue featured breakthrough writers and artists who shared narratives on modern feminism, transgender identity, as well as rape and sexual assault—to name a few—through mediums of short stories, poetry, artwork and photography. This issue is the magazine’s most successful to date in terms of dissemination and acclaimed reception. The issue for June 2018 is in honour of Pride Month, and supports LGBTQ+ writers and artists.
Works are currently published on our website. The electronic copy of the literary magazine is available for download on our website monthly (a sort of round up of the month's publications), though we don’t want it to end just there. We’d like to have print copies of the works displayed in our magazine that we will be able to sell and distribute to a worldwide audience. Print copies are the most important part of any work, and Montréal Writes strives to provide our community with beautiful physical copies of their published work.
Contributions — however large or small — will be making a difference. Donations will be allowing writers, poets, photographers and artists’ voices to be heard on a multitude of platforms, and through multiple artistic forms. Furthermore, funding will ensure that we are able to sustain our website (as there are costs there too!), publish print issues, and reward those who have submitted.
