The first time a woolly monkey climbs into your arms to give you a big hug and then cuddles into your neck is an experience you'll never forget. Or when a spider monkey swings past to tap you on the head before heading off into the trees will be a memory that replays in your mind daily. This is Monkey Island, a sanctuary that rescues orphaned baby monkeys from the animal trade. Despite all of the awful reasons for them ending up here, it has become a place of fun, laughter, and hope for a LOT of very energetic monkeys.
La Isla de Los Monos, meaning Monkey Island in English, is a rescue and rehabilitation center located in the Peruvian Amazon that cares for and rehabilitates several species of New World monkeys. The island is a 1,112 acre sanctuary that takes in monkeys that are sick, injured, have been rescued from the illegal pet trade, or have been orphaned due to the killing of their parents by poachers. They are provided with a proper diet of nutritious foods, necessary medicines, and medical treatments. They are free to roam the vast area of the island's jungle, and several groups of certain species have become almost completely independent of the caretakers and are able to provide for their own survival in a natural setting. Others need more care and stay in closer proximity to the caretakers and rely on them more on a day-to-day basis. However, the ultimate goal for all the monkeys on the island is full rehabilitation and independent living, so that they may be able to be released back into the wild to start and maintain their own thriving groups. As two time volunteers with this wonderful project, we have seen firsthand the great work being done on a day to day basis by the compassionate and dedicated members of the project and their constant commitment to the health, happiness, and ultimate goal of full rehabilitation and release back into the wild for these monkeys.
Currently the project receives no funding from the Peruvian government, and relies solely on donations from outside supporters and the volunteers who come to help work on the project itself. Currently, in addition to the constant expenses of food and medicine, the project is trying to raise extra funds to cover the cost of $800 for the Permit to be allowed to continue to use land for the next 40 years. Also the addition of solar panels to provide electricity to the island would be of immense help to the project. This would also allow for the use of a refrigerator so that they can store for much longer the food and medicine needed by the monkeys. Currently the members of the project must travel a large distance to the closest market for food and supplies, and these are only being kept fresh by the use of coolers and ice, which does not last very long in the very hot climate. Therefore the project would like to raise funds to cover the cost of the solar panels which would be $2,000 plus the cost of a refrigerator for $1,000. Thus the goal of our Gofundme Campaign is $3,800 to provide for the Permit to the land so that the project may continue to operate and fulfill its dreams for the monkeys; as well as for the solar panels and refrigerator which would help make this great project much easier to maintain and achieve success. Thanks to all the support so far we have been able to raise $1,048. This already covers the cost of $800 for the permit to the land for the next 40 years, which will allow the project to continue helping monkeys in need well into the future. Overall we are more than 25% to our total goal. As a former volunteer I started this GoFundMe Campaign to continue to help with the project, and with all your generous donations we are well on our way to our goal. As of today March 13, 2018 I will be withdrawing the Funds we have collected so far and then promptly delivering them to the staff of Monkey Island through PayPal. Thank you again for all your support and please continue to spread the word about this campaign.
