This is Mona Barbour.

She is my paternal Auntie. On Saturday December 15th, 2018 she came home to find emergency respondents flooding her streets due to an apartment fire. She realized it was her apartment building. She then counted the floors and sure enough, smoke was billowing out of her unit and her unit alone. It is suspected that the fire was prompted by a plug in Christmas night light in her bedroom. She hasn't been back allowed to see the overall damage but its suspected most of her valuables are gone or damaged beyond repair. She is currently left with nothing but the clothes on her back.

Mona has been living with a disability since birth. She suffered a brain hemorrhage at 18 months and was left partially paralyzed for life.  She often gets fluid build up on her brain and needs medical attention for it. She often breaks her legs because of her physical instability.  She also is epileptic and overall takes a hefty amount of medications for her illnesses. Because of her medical conditions, She lives on disability and in low income housing.

Despite Mona having the worst luck in the world, she perseveres like no other! She is one of the strongest, most independent woman I know who has NEVER let her illnesses define her! She is an inspiration to me and those around her and she serves as a reminder that when there is a will, there is a way!  She is a valued member of her community and loved by many. She has volunteered countless hours to those in need, and she is currently maintaining a part time job in West Vancouver to help make ends meet.

We have heard that low income housing wants to set her up in Gastown around East Hastings. This is frankly unacceptable and incredibly inconvenient. Her life, her job, and her people are on the North Shore. We need your help! Please donate if you can. And if you know of any low income housing availability PLEASE reach out <3

Mona will be embarrassed that I am sharing this with you and even more so that I am starting this campaign, let's help her feel at ease about it <3
