Smile Farms, founded as a nonprofit in 2014, trains and employs 100+ people with developmental disabilities between 2 locations: Smile Farms at Independent Group Home Living (IGHL) in Moriches, NY and Smile Farms at Community Bridge Builders (CBB) in Turlock, CA.
In the United States roughly 4.6 million people are identified as having an intellectual or developmental disability.
80% of adults with a developmental disability are unemployed.
By creating employment opportunities, Smile Farms is lifting a burden off the shoulders of these individuals and caregivers. Smile Farms plans to open an additional 3 - 4 farm campuses in the New York area in 2017 - employing an additional 40 people with developmental disabilities.
$100 provides a job for an adult with developmental disabilities for a week.
$5,200 pays the salary of 1 employee with developmental disabilities for a full year, ensuring that they can grow and produce in the communities where they live.
$25,000 funds a greenhouse and creates year-round employment for 5 - 10 adults with developmental disabilities.
My college capstone group has made it a goal of ours to lend a helping hand to Smile Farms by providing them with a $1,000 donation so they can continue expanding their footprint and striving towards their mission. Every penny helps!
UPDATE:
After surpassing our initial goal of raising $1,000 in under a month, we have decided to up our goal to $1,200! We would like to provide Smile Farms with the largest donation possible as it will help them continue to strive toward reaching their goal!
