MNC Meets The Gambia Legacy Fund

Last year, Maulden Netball Club, a community club which coaches netball to 90 local children, from 9 to 16, partnered with The Big Smile Project in The Gambia, as part of its ambition to bring the sport they love to another nation. The Big Smile run community projects throughout the West African country, from organising donations, supplying equipment to hospitals and even building their own school.
Taking the partnership to the next level, 22 members of Maulden Netball Club, including coaches and 11, 14-16 year olds, will be travelling to The Gambia for a week this April, where we will work with local schools by coaching netball every day. The project, which is fully supported by The Minister of Sport for The Gambia will be the first of its kind.
Along with coaching the Gambian girls netball skills, we are also fundraising to leave behind netball posts, bibs, coaching resources, whistles and cones for the children they visit to encourage further participation in the sport.
Unlike boys, Gambian girls currently receive no support, or sporting provisions such as kit, coaching and sporting inspiration, from other charities.
Over the last 12 months the club has donated over 70 netballs to schools in The Gambia already, organised a Gambian Quiz night and run a half term netball camp for its members.
The Big Smile has also organised a training weekend with the local Gambian PE Association to allow them introduce Netball into their schools; some of the funds raised from this site will enable us to give each teacher a basic set of kit to take the sport back to their own school.
This is our legacy to them, our ‘ideal’ scenario is to raise enough money to pay a Gambian coach to continue the project and maybe even set up a more permanent base for netball to be played in the country.
