Memorial Middle School is a special place.
We are a Title I school located in the neighborhood of Seminole Heights near downtown Tampa. Through our urban farm and garden project, we hope to meet the needs of our students, community and staff to help us grow and learn beyond the four walls of our classrooms.
We currently have a small garden that was started by a few of our science teachers. We are planning to expand that into multiple gardens (including the construction of terrace, raised, and hydroponics gardens) throughout the school as well as the addition of small backyard livestock!
Studies have shown that agricultural education prepares students to be problem solvers, show compassion, adopt healthy eating habits, strengthen interpersonal and cooperative skills and build strong leadership and relationship skills with their peers. Our hope is that our students will share the knowledge they learn through our farm and garden program with their families, which would potentially spread the benefits and have a greater impact on our community.
Our goal is to help make our students and staff feel EXCITED about coming to school. We want vegetables growing in lush gardens and on our students’ plates at lunch. We want chickens roaming the yard and teachers bringing their classes by every day to help take care of them.
We want our students and teachers to come to school with a sense of greater purpose. We want our farm and garden to be the first place students and teachers want to visit when they arrive at school. With the help of volunteers and existing resources, we are excited to make this dream a reality!
Our first farm and garden work day will be on Saturday, April 23rd. We hope to secure items to begin this project through the funding received by generous donors!
