Donovan is a kind, fun loving young man who is an incredible athlete. He has a passion for basketball, volleyball and baseball.
In July 2018 a tumour was found in Donovan’s brain. He underwent brain surgery in December to remove the tumour. Just before Christmas the pathology report came back with devastating news. The tumour was malignant, Donovan was diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma. This begun their journey into the world of cancer.
Donovan just had his second brain surgery to try and remove the portion of the tumour that was left in his brain due to its positioning and the risk associated with its removal. Today there is still 10% of the tumour remaining. The risk of further removal at this point is too great.
Aggressive treatment to eliminate the cancer will begin in the next couple of weeks. He will require chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The radiation that his treatment team recommends is a special type of radiation that is only offered in the United States. This radiation type poses the least risk of injuring healthy brain.
Donovan will be heading to Seattle for an extended period of time to receive this special Proton Radiation Therapy. MSP will be paying for the cancer treatment in the US, as Canada does not provide this special equipment. However, MSP does not provide for such essentials as, food, lodging and transportation and of course time required away from work to care for Donovan.
It will be a long road ahead for this family. We want them to be able to focus on each other and on Donovan’s treatment and not be worried about the financial burden this will undoubtedly create.
