The MLK Dream Team

Who Are We?

The Martin Luther King Dream Team is a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading civil rights awareness across East Central Indiana.  We are headquartered in Muncie, Indiana and consist of a board of volunteers who represent educational, business, and nonprofit interests within the community.  We strive to foster harmonious relationships among all people, encourage candid dialogue about civil rights, and promote non-violent social change.

Why is Civil Rights Education Important Today?

The civil rights movement often is viewed as an historical event that has little relevance to our current lives. However, the exact opposite is true. The struggle for civil rights is on going. Great leaders such as Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks were integral to the movement’s activities in the 1950s and 1960s, but there is still much work to be done. It is up to us to continue dialogue about civil rights and work toward equal rights for all.

This is why the Martin Luther King Dream Team was established.  This organization is dedicated to ensuring that the legacy of Rev. King and those who struggled beside him will not be forgotten in our local communities.

Why You Should Help

Your donation can assist us in educating our community about the civil rights movement and the need to advance the struggle to secure civil rights for all.  The money donated through this campaign will be used to support our many local programming efforts, including Black History Month events, the Freedom Bus and the “Walk of Fame.”

What Do We Do?

The Martin Luther King Dream Team promotes an appreciation for and dialogue about civil rights through a variety of educational efforts, including:

            SCHOLARSHIPS:

The “Making Dreams Happen” Scholarship provides $1000 to college-bound, high school seniors who demonstrate dedication to diversity.

            FREEDOM BUS:

The Freedom Bus is a mobile museum designed to bring local civil rights history to East Central Indiana communities.  Students from Ball State University transformed this retired city bus into an engaging and interactive learning space for fourth and fifth graders.  The Freedom Bus challenges students to think about the history of civil rights movement and the struggle for civil rights in their own communities.

          WALK OF FAME:

The Walk of Fame is located in Heekin Park in Muncie. This historical project consists of a series of plaques that pay tribute to Muncie and Delaware County residents who courageously stood up to promote civil rights.

YOUTH CITIZENSHIP AWARDS AND ESSAY CONTEST:

Every January and February, the Martin Luther King Dream Team, in conjunction with Muncie Community Schools, recognizes student leaders from our local community for their efforts to keep Dr. King's dream alive through their citizenship and creative writing.
