 SALT LAKE CITY, UT
On Tuesday, April 18th our family recieved a phone call that our husband and father, Mike Trabert,  was in a helicopter crash in Kamchatka, Russia. Mike was there skiing with a close friend when, for unknown reasons, the helicopter crashed. All occupants on board survived, however, Mike has sufferred serious injuries of a broken neck and broken ribs. He is currently in a Regional Hospital in Kamchatka. It is of upmost imporance that we get him home as SAFE and SECURE as possible to avoid further damage.

Unfortunately, the insurance will not cover international transportations in situations like this, which is why we need your help. We are hoping to reach our goal of $110,000 to help fund the medical transportation that is necessary to bring Mike home safely. Not only is it vital that we get him home safely, but it is also a priority for us to get him home as soon as we can to ensure he gets the medical care that he needs.

Mike is a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son. He spends his days working at the Salt Lake Tennis and Health Club teaching lessons to tennis players of all ages. He is an avid skiier, runner, biker and triathlete. His latest hobby has been training for an Ironman. He is the most active 60-year-old we know! He is a friend, mentor, and example to all!

We can't wait to get Mike home safely so that he can begin the medical treatment that he needs to get back to enjoying the things that he loves! Thank you all for your love and support!

Okay, after talking to the doctor, here is the plan moving forward. Dr. Dailey, one of the best neuro-surgeons in the country, would like to treat Mike very conservatively. He said if he was any other 60 year old, he would do surgery right away. But since Mike is so active and wants to get back to his active lifestyle, he recommended NOT doing surgery now. The surgery could limit his mobility up to 50-60%. He wants to see if Mike's neck will fuse on its own if kept totally immobile over the next 3 months.

So...he will stay in the hospital for another 2-3 days until he's a bit more stable. Then he'll go home where he'll need to be totally inactive for 2-4 weeks. After this period, he may be able to be out and about more but his brace will need to be on 24-7. Dr. Dailey will monitor his progress closely with X-Rays every couple of weeks.

At the end of the 3 month period, they will see if his neck is fusing or if they will need to do surgery at that time. The goal is to eventually get Mike back to full activity!

Each day he's doing better. Shaved and showered today with brace on through it all! He is eating well all by himself but is totally exhausted. Now that he's moved from the Neuro Critical Care to Neuro Acute Care, they won't come in so often to check on him so he should be able to get a good night's sleep.

This will be a pretty long recovery but we're just SO grateful that he is alive and here and getting the help he needs! Thank you all for your constant thoughts and prayers. We'll continue to keep you updated as things progress.

Love to all,
Dinny

After spending a week in the Russian hospital, Mike finally returned home yesterday! He is pretty worn out, but is keeping a positive attitude. We are so grateful to have him home safe and getting the medical care that he needs. Mike had multiple tests and scans done yesterday but we are still waiting to talk to the doctors about possible options besides surgery. Until we have the chance to talk to the doctors in depth, we cannot give any definite information about the extent of his injuries and recovery. We will keep you all updated as much as possible.

We would like to reiterate our deep gratitude and appreciation for all of your help in getting Mike home safely. We could not have done it without all of the love and support we have received!

The process to get Mike home has been a challenging one - full of many ups and downs but so full of gratitude. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support we have received during this difficult time! Words cannot express how thankful we are for all of the contributions and donations that have been made to help us get Mike home safely. To say we were humbled by and astonished at reaching our goal of $110,000 in only one day, would be an understatement.

We are confident in the AirMed team we have hired to bring him home. With the help of Senator Orrin Hatch’s office and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow along with the willingness of the Russian government to expedite the process, we were able to secure the visas for the medical team. AirMed will transport Mike from Kamchatka to the University of Utah Hospital on Wednesday where a medical team will be awaiting his arrival.

We cannot even begin to thank you all for making it possible for us to reach our goal! We are amazed at the number of friends and family who continue to reach out asking how they can donate. Due to the injury Mike has sustained, he will need to have surgery so any additional donations will go towards his medical expenses.

Thank you for your donations, your love, and your prayers. Together, we will see Mike back to the life he loves very soon.

If you haven't already, you should inform both Utah Senators and your congressman, who can coordinate government action on Mike's behalf. This seems like the kind of cause that the U.S. government should be intervene in and to pay for.

Did you contact the Russian US Embassy? They can provide medical evacuations and transportation as well as cost of care and living expenses and help navigate with the country on medical bills and care. This is so aweful so sorry your family is experiencing this!
