SAVE MIKE MCHUGH!
He's made some amazing albums in the old studio over the years. Lets all work to get him back on his feet, and back to recording music the way he should be. This was in 2011 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP14as_2fOk
All of the money will go directly towards helping Mike get a van, start the studio, pay the rent, bills, and other associated costs.
He has also expressed interest in renting the space and equipment to other producers, engineers and artists.
Thanks to all of you!!! Be a part of music history and help Mike get back to his happy place and off the streets.
And just to keep things clear and transparent I'll add that i'm gonna control the funds as we go along to make sure they're going directly towards the things previously stated and not into anything else. I'll make sure and provide documentation as we progress after raising the funds. Let me know if you have any questions!
I'm Klee Van Hamersveld, I've known Mike for about a decade and have been around to watch a downward spiral that has to stop now. This is definitely rock bottom. I've done what I can to keep the opportunistic vultures at bay in regards to his equipment and now it's time to get it all back into a studio and get him working again! You're all helping him come out of a serious state of depression and hopelessness. You're all, in his words, "saving my life, thank you!"
Thanks again everyone!
Sorry for not updating you in awhile, just so many things of my own I've been neglecting during this time helping Mike that I've been trying to get done.
So, Mike was up and walking when I saw him a week ago and then got transferred to another physical rehabilitation unit for after surgery care. He's getting released today and has secured a small studio space for the next 3 months and also a panel van of his choosing. I'm out of town at the moment but will be back tomorrow to go see him. We're looking for a few household items for him. So if anyone has a nice bed they don't want anymore or could possibly donate we'd be very appreciative. If not, no problem, we'll figure something out. We have to get something decent do to his back issues. I'll also check as to what else he might need tomorrow.
I personally am looking to find a CPA for this money as I'm learning that it may be a huge financial burden for me personally, as I've found out that they use a 1099-K form for donations of this size and I already have tax liabilities from 1099's in my own field of work. I'm in an unknown position do to the nature of this large donation so I want to get a clearer idea of what my obligations to the IRS are gonna be. They're pretty vague about it on this site and others of the same nature.
Well, gotta get on the road! I'll update again in the next few days after seeing Mike, his new place and his van.
And again, thank you all for everything!!!
So, Mike went under the knife earlier this afternoon for his back surgery and we're hoping it's a positive outcome with less pain and more functionality over time. Cross your fingers, say a prayer, throw a coin at some koi pond or in a fountain! Whatever you do just keep some positive energy in the air for Mike as he goes through this operation. Things are not gonna be easy but thanks to all of you he'll have a bit of stability getting back on his feet and back to a studio in the near future. We're planning on picking up a van on thursday if all works out with the gofundme people as they've made it quite difficult to access the funds from the page. We better get em quick because he's got nowhere to go until we do. I'll keep you all updated on the outcome of his surgery when I find out more this evening! And remember we've set up firstname.lastname@example.org for further updates after this page is gone. Thank you all!!!
I don't want to be assumptious, but dare I say the bare bones to success for this transition will have to be beyond financial support. I was hoping that some of the funds would be applied to what is typical of this kind of transition, with professional support. Perhaps something more along the lines of a 90 day live in recovery program. I would like to see this bird to fly, but its a tough road. Best wishes to this chance in life. I hope that you find professional support, Mike, if you are already not getting it.
Greetings and salutations! I just got off of the phone with Klee and stuff is really starting to happen. There is a van in the works and the first three months rent has been paid so Mike has somewhere to work and a way to get around. A couple of issues have come up that could use the attention of this group. Klee could really use some help from a CPA or tax expert. The funds are treated like a 1099 and taxable. Klee is on the hook for this and would appreciate guidance on how to approach April 15th. It is important that he saves enough out of the fund to pay off the taxes so that he is not personally liable. It is important to me that he isn't penalized for putting this all together. Secondly, we need recommendations for mental health providers to help guide Mike back to a good state of mind. This whole thing has been traumatic and it would be short sided to think we could just get him a van and a pad and think that everything is going to be alright. Lastly, if anyone has a van for sale or donation that would be a good fit for Mike, they are in the market. Ideally, it would be a panel van to secure the gear as well as possible. There is about $3K set aside for the van so it would need to be in this price range. Please feel free to contact me or Klee directly. I am just trying to alleviate some of the pressure that Klee is under trying to work and manage this fund. We have come so far but aren't done quite yet. Please let me know if you have a recommendation for tax help, mental health support or a van. Klee informed me that he will be providing a more detailed update within the next 48 hours. We are getting there. Just a couple more issues to figure out and we will be giving Mike the best chance possible for a full recovery. It is going to be great having him back on his feet and doing what he does best.
Rumor has it that Mike Martt is closing the Green Room Recording and Rehearsal Studio in Long Beach. It is a large place that is live in style...kitchen and shower. I don't know the details, but I think it is a rental or lease. It is in an industrial area close to Signal Hill.
I brought Mike a little breakfast this morning and chilled with him a bit. His spirits are high though he was pretty weak. We talked about goals and he has a great opportunity to get into a new studio/living space once he has had a chance to see a doctor and deal with the immediate health concerns. One day at a time...he is not in the rain and is comfortable and warm thanks to Klee and his many friends.
Can't wait to see you back doing what you were born to do Mike. Always had such a great time recording with you in so many bands. You are a solid human and a beautiful soul. Keep the chin up man. You got so many people backing you. You are. It alone. Sending you positive energy. Cheers
Thanks for the update! And for the info. People are often skeptical, and there was a recent, local go fund me scandal that took advantage of people's generosity. People should be cautious, but skepticism shouldn't dismissively stop people from helping out.
Mike and I got close in a short and condensed period of time, the sonic results were, & still are beyond expectations and together we recorded one my favorite records ever! If I could lean in and whisper in his ear I'd say "Stick around fukr, we got work to do"! love you Mike, Chris
