Medical Care for Michael & Jordan

“Some people want it to happen,
some wish it would happen,
others make it happen” - Michael Jordan

The family and friends of Michael Lightbourn and Jordan Lightbourn have put together this Go Fund Me page for anybody who would like to assist with the enormous medical and after-care expenses both immediate and unforeseen resulting from a horrific car accident.

On April 2nd, 2018, Mike Lightbourn Sr, a much-loved father, brother, uncle, cousin and Bahamian bee keeper & vegetable farmer, was driving in Abaco, Bahamas with his son Jordan Lightbourn to retrieve some bee hives when he was a rear-ended by another vehicle traveling at a very high rate of speed. Jordan was ejected from the vehicle while Mike was crushed inside. They both had to be air-lifted to Nassau and rushed to the emergency ward at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Mike & Jordan were rear-ended on their way to a bee removal.

Jordan suffered a large gash from under his left eye up over the top of his head, a fracture on his cheek bone, and severe friction burns (road rash) on all his extremities. Jordan has since been discharged and released to travel to the USA where he needs facial reconstructive surgery and to recover from his road burns.

Mike’s injuries resulted in numerous broken bones, including two broken hips, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, arm, shoulder, scapula, both collapsed lungs. torn and sprained ligaments, liver damage, along with several serious lacerations about his body and head.  The worst of the injuries is that he suffered multiple (too many to count) strokes while waiting for help in the car and transport to Nassau (perhaps from dehydration) and is now paralyzed on his left side. He is now fully aware and conversive, but three weeks later he is still unable to move. Doctors have informed us that there’s a good chance this may go away in six months, but it’s truly unknown if that’s the case and the next six months are crucial to his recovery. Meanwhile, doctors have operated on his shoulder, and hip surgery is recommended later on down the line when he is a bit stronger.

For the last three weeks, we’ve watched him fight to recover with everything he has, all hoping and doing what we can as a family, taking turns to see him.  He’s been in the Intensive Care Unit and is now in the Men’s Orthopaedic Ward at Princess Margaret Hospital.  He hopefully will be discharged in a week or two now that the injuries are no longer life threatening and they need the bed.  While sounding like a victory, Mike is currently only capable of very limited movements of his right arm and leg, as he had surgery on his right shoulder at the end of last week to repair his broken scapula.

Currently, he is unable feed himself, shave, bathe, or even press the button on his Hospital bed to adjust his position. Once released, Mike will need three nurses with him 24 hrs a day, to help care for him for at least for the next three to six months until we are able to see how his recovery is going. We’ve found Pat's Nursing Home in Nassau where he can go, where the nurses are kind and their goal is to help him recover.

Mike Sr. left, with his brother, Raymond.

While we hope to be able to have some of these costs eventually offset by the car insurance, in the meantime the care home costs, ambulances to move him to the facility and doctors’ appointments (he can’t just get in a car), physiotherapy appointments, etc will need to be paid for.

Additionally, Mike’s son, Mike Jr. and other family members must fly in and out of the island to visit and meet with doctors a few times a week, and we need to get someone to assist on Mike’s farm to take care of the plants and bees.

It’s very hard for us to come to you asking for help, but we’d greatly appreciate anything you can do as we all work to get Mike and Jordan back to health. The family has come together and is doing everything we can, however we are spread around the world and unable to provide all of the care he will need. We greatly appreciate your assistance in helping Mike and Jordan recover.

Thank you everybody!
