Mike Bright VB Scholarship 2018

Donation protected
Mike Bright (1937-2017) was a two-time indoor volleyball Olympian and a legendary beach volleyball champion who won the first five Manhattan Beach Opens with his partner, Mike O'Hara.  His many volleyball, surfing and paddling accomplishments are notable, but perhaps the most notable, is the mark he made on the people and players he inspired throughout his life.

Mike instilled, in his players (as he coached), his fans and peers, a drive to work your hardest and excel with good technique, all while maintaining composure and good sportsmanship.

In his later years, (while paralyzed) Mike loved to watch as his daughter, Bonnie Bright, coached on the beach court in their shared back yard.  Bonnie formed Bright Volleyball Club in the family name to carry on the tradition of coaching and to pass on the methods learned from her Olympian mom, Patti Bright, and her dad, Mike.  Mike often yelled down pointers as he watched and he truly enjoyed seeing the players at the club learn and excel.

Beach volleyball is still very new to college and there is not much in the way of scholarship money for the players who get recruited.  To honor Mike and his contributions to the sport of volleyball, Bright Volleyball Club(BVC) has formed this tuition assistance program to help BVC players that wish to continue their volleyball careers into college.

Please help us meet our goal for 2018.  Together, we can help send a few players, with classic Bright technique, off to a good head start on their college careers.

Seniors for 2018...
Sydney Stevens has trained at Bright Volleyball Club for three years and has signed with Cal State Long Beach to play beach volleyball (no scholarship money).  She works hard at her technique, has excellent court sense and the coaches at CSULB will come to find that she is a pleasure to coach...

Maile Counts (Mike Bright's granddaughter) is currently being sought after by several schools for beach and indoor volleyball (again, no scholarship money).  Maile has trained under her mom, Bonnie Bright, for the past 7 years and also embodies that Bright technique and drive.  She will work hard for any coach and we hope to see her go far...

2019-2000 promises to bring more players to keep a close eye on for college.  Maya Pokletar, Ashley Gonnerman and Christine DeRoos should be on any coach's watch list!

Thank you for your time and consideration.
