In 2002, to house archival materials donated by the family of Gen. Maurice Rose, the highest ranking jewish officer in the Army who was killed by a German patrol in WWII, a group of Middletown, CT veterans formed the GREATER MIDDETOWN MILITARY MUSEUM INC.
The non-stock coprporation initiated the erection of a museum and research center in that City and was granted tax exempt status by Internal Revenue Service pursuant to IRS Code 501(c)(3) on October 20, 2003, allowing all donations to qualify for donor tax deduction pursuant to that designation.
For the next 10 years, the organization collected archival materials as well as military memoribilia and pursued public and private funding for the Museum building to house its collections as well as a classroom/research center to provde academic support for local history students and others studying Middletown, CT's rich Military heritage.
For instance, the existing Starr Mill forged swords for soldiers in Washington's Continental Army in 18th Century as well as for presentation to dignitairies throughout the world. In 1806 the Mill produced flintlock pistols under contract to the Army which were used in the War of 1812 and are the model used for the the Mitilary Police branch of the US Army.
With $850,000.00 in bonds and other public funding in place, a groundbreaking for the buliding depicted in the architect's rendering in this site will take place on Tuesday, June 20th at 2:00 PM in the City of Middletown, CT. The facility is lacated within the City;s Veteran's Memorial Park, adjacent to the Connecticut Trees of Honor, each planted in memory of a state soldier who gave his/her life for our country in the Middle East since 9/ll.
It is anticipated the exterior building construction will be completerd in 2017, and funds are now being raised in this "GO FUND ME" appeal for the following Museum needs:
1. Completion of the interior contruction and outfitting of offices, classroom and display cases/areas for Archival documents and Museum pieces.
2. Furnishings, computers, for the Learning Institute and research facility.
3. Finish plumbing and utitites, climate control and material preserevation systems, HVAC, exterior lanscaping, window treatments and signage.
4. Ongoing epenses of insurance, security systems and maintenance.
In addition to tax deductible donations, memberships dues will be also be used for the foregoing Museum purposes.
