Michaela's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
My best friend's name is Michaela. She was born with Focal Schlerosis (FSGS) which is premature aging of the kidney resulting in end-stage renal failure. At the age of 21 she started to rapidly decline. Imagine, at the peak of your life, just graduating college ready to take on the world, your body decides to fail you.

During a time we should have been celebrating our academic accomplishments, we spent days praying for a match. Around her 22nd birthday she received a direct kidney donation after my family suffered a terrible loss. Through tragedy came hope for more than just Michaela. Finally, after a long road to recovery, Michaela was able to start her life as a young adult. She had the chance to pursue her dreams and grow into the woman we all knew she was capable of being.

After 17 months with her new kidney an unexpected, rare infection hit that triggered a spiral in Michaela's health. Ultimately her body rejected her kidney donation. Over the course of 10 months Michaela was put on dialysis and spent about 100 days in the hospital trying to fight for her life. Her condition became so rare that she was put on a national list for kidney transplants at high need.

I cannot begin to describe the pain we all went through while Michaela continuously received bad news about her health. I stood by and watched while the hope for life after her kidney failure came close to nonexistent. I sat with her mother as tears rolled down her cheeks while she repeated that she refused to lose her child. I prayed over my friend as she fought to keep the understanding that God had a plan for her life and that she was not alone.

In the mists of despair a phone call came in that completely changed everything.  By His grace and through the optimism of many came a new kidney. On December 2nd of this year Michaela underwent her second kidney transplant.  It was a miracle. I am happy to say that the transplant was successful as of today and that Michaela is on her way to recovery.

As you can imagine, her health has put a financial burden on her. She has been unable to work during the time she was on dialysis and will now need to take more time off to tend to her new transplant. Although her job has been gracious with understanding her health condition and supporting her recovery, she will still need added help. By creating this GoFundMe I am hoping to give Michaela some financial support for her everyday living needs, home care, anti-rejection medication, and weekly trips to her doctors in Boston. During this time of giving, I hope that you can find it in your hearts and in your means to please share this page and/or donate.

To my best friend, you are my hero. May you forever understand the depths of your strength and the purity of your magic. I love you. Thank you everyone for reading.
