This year, during the Miami New Times Iron Fork Grand Tasting, two Johnson & Wales students will participate in a cooking competition. The winner will take home a scholarship and the Michael Shikany Knife of Excellence Award. The event, now entering its second year, honors the life and legacy of Chef Michael Shikany.
"Akin to the scientific evolution, we too as a society have followed suit (some would argue that we pioneer and science follows). Everything must evolve. My passion is food. Our purpose (because it's way bigger than just me, and the industry knows it) is to show the necessary change and enjoy the artistry of a simple process. A process that comes to life by the thoughtful pairing or multiple sensory stimuli much like, life. In 2013, the first to establish a casual fine dining concept in Wynwood, Shikany opened his eponymous and revolutionary eatery. As one to fearlessly push boundaries and never settle for anything less than perfection, he meticulously curated every inch of his restaurant and put forth unexpected and daring avant-garde dishes. Pioneering his way through South Florida was no easy task and came at a time when our culinary landscape began to turn over a new leaf. Even though the accolades piled on (2013 Rising Star Chef by Miami Modern Luxury Magazine, 2014 Zagat Guide's Hottest Newcomer, 2014 Chowhound Restaurant of the Year Semifinalist, 2014 Ocean Drive's Top New Restaurants and 2014 Miami New Times Ten Best Restaurants), he carried on with razor-sharp focus yet unaware of just how big his impact truly was.
Chef Shikany envisioned a future where he helped others succeed. Among his many dreams, he hoped to one day be able to open a culinary boarding school and rehabilitation facility for young adults and teens suffering from addiction and abuse. Finding his place in the kitchen at a very young age, gave him pause and a feeling of belonging. Seeing the joy he brought to others through his culinary art made him smile.
Your donation will directly impact and inspire the life of an aspiring chef. Michael Shikany left too soon and will be forever missed. His unmatched vision can now live at the hands of others who equally share his passion for gastronomy and excellence.
