On March 18, 2016, the award-winning Emerge: Black America's Newsmagazine, re-emerged on the digital stage as EmergeNewsOnline.com, with former Emerge editor-in-chief George E. Curry at the helm.
And in this rough-and-tumble political season with so much at stake in the upcoming November election, it was not a minute too soon.
Since award-winning Emerge was closed in 2000, there has been a huge vacuum in the media. No magazine or website has replaced the hard-hitting magazine that the Washington Post declared “gets better with each issue.”
Curry, editor of the publication for the last seven of its 10-year existence and the first African American president of the American Society of Magazine Editors,
has pledged to resurrect the same kind of uncompromising journalism for which his print predecessor was famous.
Emerge won more than 40 national journalism awards for such stories as Kemba’s Nightmare, The Death of Emmett Till, Farrakhan, Jesse and Jews: Can They All Get Along, Hijacking Justice: The Right-Wing Conspiracy to Control the Courts, Guinea Pigs: Secret Medical Experiments on Blacks, The Final Days of Malcolm X, Rape of a Spelman Coed, Driving While Black, Crime Pays: Cashing in on Black Prisoners, Environmental Racism, Diversity in Prep Schools, Who Killed Dr. Martin Luther King? and Growing Up Black in Mississippi.
In 2003, Ballantine Books, a division of Random House, published The Best of Emerge Magazine, a 665-page collection that said Emerge “changed the face of African American news.”
EmergeNewsOnline.com will continue the uncompromising journalistic tradition of its namesake, combining a vibrant website that carries the latest national and international news each day, a daily eNewsletter and an in-depth monthly digital magazine component that both reports and analyzes news of interest to Blacks and other people of color.
Naturally, there are many costs associated with producing first-rate journalism, including building and maintaining a vibrant website, paying staff, subscribing to the Associated Press and other news services, creating an app and other expenses.
That's where you come in. We've been able to create EmergeNewsOnline.com because of your enthusiastic support and we deeply appreciate it. But as mentioned above, none of this is free and, quite candidly, we need your help to sustain us, especially in this start-up stage.
Please support journalism that supports you!!!
These are the kinds of stories that attracted me to journalism. And these are the kinds of stories you'll be able to read on EmergeNewsOnline.com.
But...we can't do it without your help. Please contribute TODAY!
.Because of George's death the distribution of emergenewsonline has been halted temporarily as his team is working to decide the best way to continue to his work in his honor
Please be aware that George Curry has died and this project may no longer be underway. Donors may be due refunds. I haven't seen any indication that someone is continuing George's work on Emerge.
Saw this on the Joe Madison Show...Have never read your magazine looking forward to reading in the future!
