Hello friendly Manitobans and Mexican Canadians.

The Mex Y Can Association of Manitoba Inc is hosting a gofundme campaign to help as many Mexican people as possible affected by the September 08 and 19, 2017 catastrophic earthquakes in Mexico.

No donation is too small, every little bit helps. These funds will be dispersed to trusted and accountable civil organizations in Mexico to help fund the continued rescue and recovery efforts. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

Donations Committee Report

Mex Y Can truly appreciates the tremendous support from the community in Manitoba as our Gofunding campaign, to help Mexico after the devastating 2017 earthquakes, raised half of our goal of $10, 000 in less than 48 hrs, making us at that time a leader Canadian provincial organization showing solidarity with Mexico.

Also, Mex Y Can received tremendous support from the media and many interviews were provided in radio and tv, in English, French and Spanish. Big THANK YOU!

Among the many donations received, $453.00 in the name of Laidlaw School, from a fundraising event organized by Anson Stefanyshen and his class Grade 3/4 under the tremendous support given by Mrs Kaitlin Pasishnik went to our campaign.

Mex Y Can created an internal Donations Committee who was in charge of leading the process to select the civil organizations in Mexico to receive the funds collected in the fundraising efforts conducted.

Since Mexico received tremendous support from many countries which in many cases was used for emergency purposes, the goal of Mex Y Can was to help the reconstruction of the country which is a process that will take time.

A criteria for selection was developed by the Donation Committee. The community had the opportunity to propose civil organizations for consideration. A total of 18 organizations were evaluated and five finalists made it through. One focus of the selection criteria was that organizations will help rural communities.

The finalist were:

Summary of Transactions

$ 8399.64 from Go Fundme deposited in the Mex Y Can Bank Account
$5000 donated from Mex Y Can
$ 299 collected from Culture Days (the public and performers) + Chilean Dance Group donation

Total $ 13, 698.64

Mex Y Can transferred on December 6, 20117 the amount of $ 4,566.21 minus $54.16 processing fee from the Bank in Canada. Total sent $4,512.05. Final financial figures received in Mexico to be confirmed.

There was a delay in transferring the funds due to the fact that the Organizations were busy working in projects related to help people in rural areas in Mexico, where access to internet or phone is challenging, so communication was delayed in receiving their bank account information and a copy of their constitutional acts showing their legitimacy.
Mex Y Can was also investigating the best option to transfer funds without many fees involved in Canada and Mexico. This paperwork process also took time as Mex Y Can had to demonstrate legitimacy as well.

Thank you!

As we approach to our funding goal, Mex Y Can has created an internal Donations Committee who has been in charge of compiling a list of tentative Mexican civil organizations where the funds will go. We listened to all input received from the community in Manitoba as well as conducted a thorough research for reliable organizations.

A criteria for selection was developed and 5 finalist organizations have made it through. One focus of the selection criteria is that organizations will help rural communities.

The Board of Directors is in the process of reviewing the information compiled and the proposal from the organizations that show how the funds would be allocated. Only 3 organizations will be selected by the Board of Directors representing the registered members of the Association. The total funds from the GoFunding campaign plus the Mex Y Can donation will be equally allocated to each organization after processing fees, if any.

Some of the office space of two selected organizations was affected by the earthquakes and communication was a bit challenging resulting in some delays to receive information, but now all documentation is in place. Once a decision is reached a formal announcement will follow. Gracias!
