Message in a Melody 2017 Campaign

Message in a Melody (MIM) is a fundraising organization  at the University of California, Los Angeles dedicated to fighting pediatric cancer by supporting research at the Department of Pediatric Oncology at Mattel Children’s Hospital. Specifically, we work in partnership with Dr. Theodore Moore, who aims to use his research at his Cell Therapy clinics to one day bring the remission rates to 100% for all pediatric cancer patients.

While meaningful strides have been made in pediatric cancer research in the last few decades, there are still 43 children diagnosed with cancer everyday. The average age of these children is six years old. Childhood cancers are a diverse group of cancers which demand their own research for treatment. Our goal is to help find the cure.

MIM primarily accomplishes this goal through it’s year long fundraising and awareness efforts, culminating in a concert for the UCLA community in partnership with the Campus Events Commission (CEC). In the past, MIM has successfully booked high profile electronic music artists such as Anna Lunoe, Hayden James, and Autograf to support our overarching mission to educate and raise awareness about pediatric cancer around the world, and important steps individuals can take to address this issue.

As an organization, we believe in the power of music to change lives and make a positive impact in the community. Music therapy is a powerful tool that can be used to fight anxiety and depression, two common side-effects of chemo-therapy and cancer in general.  By promoting music as a healing tool, we hope to create a discussion about mental health, overcoming adversity, and coping mechanisms. Music is a strong unifying force, and we strive to create an inclusive, collaborative environment at our concert where students can learn about pediatric cancer while relying on the support of others around them.

Message in Melody is comprised of undergraduate students who come from a diverse set of backgrounds, majors, and interests. What binds us all together is that we share the same passion and drive to take a stand against pediatric cancer. The majority of us have been personally affected by this disease in some way, whether that be through close friends or family.

By donating to our cause you will be directly influencing pediatric cancer research and changing the lives of children right here at Mattel Children's Hospital. We cannot thank you enough for your contribution!!

There are approximately 388,000 survivors of pediatric cancer alive today- our goal is to make that number infinite. That's our message in a melody.
