Mental Health Elective to Africa

I AM KAREN OLLOSSON - WHY FUND ME?

To be honest I am absolutely terrible at selling myself, blowing my own trumpet has never really been an art form I have mastered! However, what I'm trying to do is give you a flavour of who I am, what I like, what makes me tick and why I so much want to specialise as a nurse in mental health.
I am 46, a  wife, mother, mature student at the University of East Anglia and have a loving family. I like a laugh with the best of them but know when to be serious. I am all for fair play and do not like any form of bullying or harassment of others. I like to bake bread and cakes. I love a good jigsaw puzzle,  reading books (especially ones by Dawn French, who I find to be wonderfully funny).I love our 3 cats, each has their own personality and provide hours of entertainment.

WHAT IS IT FOR?

In August 2017, I am choosing to undertake 3 weeks unpaid voluntary work in a hospital in Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania), so that I can gain experience & knowledge  of mental health care in a different country to the UK.  I will experience a different culture and be given the chance to learn a new language to help cross the language barrier with staff and patients. I will meet new people and local students. It will also allow me to gain valuable insight that I can use to greatly benefit future patient care. My elective will help me in my nursing practice, so that when I qualify as a registered mental health nurse, I will be bringing a range of experiences, from various settings, and be better prepared to provide excellent holistic care to NHS patients.

HOW WILL I USE THE DONATIONS?

Any donations of cash will help towards flights, accommodation, insurance and costs for getting to placement. There is the cost of buying scrubs and equipment for placement such as a stethoscope, latex gloves and disposable aprons so that I can protect myself when there. I would like to leave them for local staff and other students when I return home.

MY APPRECIATION AND THANK YOU

Thank you ever so much for reading and for any possible donation you may make, it really is appreciated, and means the absolute world to me. The funds will allow me to really benefit from this elective. I will learn so much and am excited at the prospect of going.

I fully appreciate that I am very fortunate to be in a position to do this through the help of donations such as yours and I can promise you that I will work my very hardest in Tanzania to benefit the local patients, to ensure that I would make you proud of me through your donation and that I will use the knowledge and experience gained to really help improve my nursing practice and the care of patients in the UK.

Thank you so very much - Karen
