In the early 1850s, when the Peninsula was almost totally undeveloped, 2 Irishmen, Dennis Oliver and Daniel McGlynn, bought land along the San Francisquito Creek to raise cattle for the San Francisco market. Remembering how much they had enjoyed holidays in the small Irish village of Menlo (now part of Galway City), they named their ranch Menlo Park and erected at the entrance on County Road a large gate with the ranch name in bold letters at the top. In the 1860s, when the railroad along the Peninsula was built, the local station was given the name of the ranch. The surounding area including today's Atherton and East Palo Alto then became known as Menlo Park. After surviving weather damage and the 30,000+ soldiers of Camp Fremont (during WWI), the gate was destroyed by a careening automobile in 1922. The City of Menlo Park consisted of 1 square mile centered on the train station when it incorporated in 1927.

The goal of this Project is to construct a replica of the original gate and erect it near its original location on El Camino Real opposite Ravenswood Avenue. The drawings for the gate are being done by volunteers, but we are asking those who live in and love Menlo Park to fund the construction and installation.

All donations to the Menlo Gates Project will go directly to the cost of construction and installation.

The Menlo Gates Project has been created by the Menlo Park Historical Association (MPHA). For more information about MPHA, visit the MPHA website at .

FINAL update:

The Menlo Gates Project has raised a total of $42,595 from 56 donations. The gofundme portion is $6,705 from 37 donations. THANK YOU EACH DONOR! The City of Menlo Park has decided to donate an additional $43,000, bringing us to our goal of $86,000. The City has also agreed to install the Gates at the corner of Ravenswood Ave and Alma St. We are now in the process of finishing the required construction and landscape drawings and preparing the required contracts. We hope to complete the manufacture by the end of 2018 and anticipate a dedication in March 2019. This is the final update on gofundme. Future updates will be posted directly to the MPHA facebook page: //MenloParkHistoricalAssociation

Last night, the City Council approved a matching gift of $43K to the Menlo Gates Project, bringing the total for the Project to the required $86K. The exact location for the Gates is to be decided by the City within the next 60 days. The manufacture of the Gates will begin as soon as the construction drawings (submitted last Jan 3rd) are approved by the City.

Progress on the Gates Project has resumed! The announcement last August that the library might soon be rebuilt put a hold on plans for the Menlo Gates. Now, following a suggestion by Mayor Ohtaki, the plan is to go ahead and install the Gates. The Gates are designed to be relatively moveable if moving proves necessary.
Donations now total $41,000, which is half of the estimated total cost, but enough to start construction. The drawings package was submitted to the City Manager on January 3rd. Construction will begin as soon as the drawings are approved. We’re hoping for installation by early summer, followed (when?) by a dedication ceremony attended by (if possible) the mayor or a representative of Galway City.
We still have another $44,000 to raise! This is a community project. Please consider making a donation—any amount—either directly to MPHA or using this gofundme site.
Go to the Project website at for more information on how to give, the cost estimate, and more.

*The Menlo Gates Project has now received (directly or by pledges) from 45 donations a total of $40,470, which is only about half of the estimated cost, but enough to start construction once our construction drawings are approved by the City. We are hoping that in the coming months more residents and others who appreciate the significance of these gates for the history of our City will make a donation at some level so this will truly be a "peoples" project.
*Approval of our drawings is being delayed by the debate over plans for a new library. We hope to see a resolution for our situation soon.
*Galway City, Ireland (where the village of Menlo is located) has recently made a donation of $500.
*We are truly saddened to report that original motivator and founder of this project, Ernst Meissner, passed away yesterday (Nov. 26th).
