Men’s Australian Storm Story
Our Aussie Storm Men’s Goalball team has a rich history in our 39 years of playing Goalball in Australia. The team played for a medal at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games losing the Bronze to Spain and has continually won it’s Oceania Region, until that region was disbanded and qualification was paired with Africa in 2011. Australia lost its Regional Championship game to Algeria who were ranked 6th in the world at that time, in a Golden Goal overtime thriller that ended 4-5. This saw our men’s program not qualify for the London Paralympics and subsequently had its funding cut for 3 years. Australia finished 4th, 5th and 4th in the following three Asian Pacific Regional Championships, 15th at the 2015 IBSA World Games and 15th at the most recent 2018 Goalball World Championships in Sweden.
Your tax deductible donation to meet our overall Goalball Australia budget of $150,000 across all programs will establish the now cut in funding from Sport Australia across the high performance model, but also allow for grassroots players to have opportunities to travel and play with the senior Australian team. This will help develop their skills and prepare them for future opportunities to play for Australia at the highest level. This isn’t just an elite program, it’s a program that needs to be rebuilt with the future and the present in mind.
Goalball Australia is seeking funding to enable our Aussie Storm players to travel to more international events and provide the squad with the playing experience required to not just compete internationally at major regional qualifying events, but to actually test new players and establish coaching plans which can develop the playing skills needed to once again, compete for a medal in Paralympic Games and World Championships.
Jon Horsbourgh is the Aussie Storm Captain and scored 27 goals at the 2018 IBSA World Championships, finishing 7th in the world for goals scored at the tournament. He is an elite player who still has a big future in his chosen sport. Additional funding will help Jon to mentor and guide the players around him through training camps and international tournaments.
