Through tragedy comes triumph.
On May 28th, 2016 at the Age of 26 Adam Campbell, an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran took his life.
Adam and I barely passed High School together, most of the times we sat in English class watching videos of Army Rangers when we were suppose to be working.
We would end up enlisting together while still in High School and both shipping off shortly after graduation but not before getting matching "warrior" tattoos.
Adam chose 11B, Infantry.
I chose 19D, A Scout.
We didn't see each other for a few years but still kept in communication as we were both stationed at different bases.
Somehow, someway, the stars aligned and we both not only were in Iraq at the same time but both happened to unknowingly be at the same base to refuel and resupply when we ran into one another.
We connected as if we had hung out the day before, then we both got back to our missions and didn't see one another until we both transitioned out of the Army and moved home.
After returning home Adam was still facing his own battles internally and fighting his own demons until one day, those demons got the best of him and won.
Our nation is doing an incredible injustice to my brothers in arms by not having a slow integration process.
One day we are in a foreign country, sleeping with our weapons, on guard 24/7 and profiling every person as they may be the one to take our life or worse yet, the life of the person to our left or right to being back home just days later and expected to be "normal"
The truth is, we feel everything but normal. Most of us desire to go back because being over there WAS normal as it was what we had grown accustomed to.
With the help of our community I plan to do everything in my power to make an impact locally for Veterans in need by partnering with non-profit based organizations within the Michiana area.
I will step off from Healthy Happies in South Bend and be walking 22 miles to Adams grave located in Walkerton, In.
My pack is an Army Issue Alice Pack which will be loaded with 45 pounds(standard marching weight) and I will be carrying the American Flag to show pride, unity and support for our Veterans.
The Annual Memorial March will take place Monday May 28th, Memorial Day and the 2 year anniversary of Adams Death.
100% of all proceeds will be donated to Kernan's Heros in South Bend, IN.
