The luckiest dog to get shot

Meka came into my life in 2010, when I rescued her from a lifetime of being called Sugar. She has been the best sidekick I could have asked for over the past 8 years.
On Saturday January 13, 2018 while walking on a designated hiking trail outside of Hinton, Alberta, a hunter mistook her for a wolf. He shot her with a .22 caliber bullet 30m ahead of me and my friends.

Meka is a 38lb, white/grey husky, with blue eyes, curled tail, and was wearing a hunter orange collar.

The bullet went through her front right leg, then passed through her rear left leg. Fortunately for Meka, the bone damage in her front leg has potential to repair itself without invasive surgery. Surgery will be re-evaluated at the end of January. However, we have been left with the vet bills because this individual shot my dog and is not taking finanical responsibility for doing so.

My hope with this story, is that hunters, dog owners, and the general public will be better informed, and that it might prevent someone else from making the same mistake.

Its been 79 days since Meka was shot, and she's finally cast free! Meka ended up with a skin infection, due to the bandages rubbing on her leg which resulted in many shredded bandages and antibiotics. She had x-rays done two weeks ago, and based on the results, we can now start slow rehab and 5 minute walks!!!
Unfortunately after further investigation, the authorities were unable to lay charges against the shooter.
Meka has never been more excited for a walk then she is now, and we look forward to off-leash walks and running in the woods again soon!
Thank you again everyone for your generous support!

Meka is still listening to the doctors orders. It's hard to see, although I know it's the best thing for her healing process. As far as surgery is concerned, it may be a while before a decision is made. If healing continues, rehab might be our best option. It's a long road and our fingers remain crossed for best available outcome. Stay tuned for my next update when Meka loses the bandages!

We were able to bring Meka home last night, under strict bedrest and medication schedule. We hope to know in a week, as to whether or not surgery will take place.
Meka is home!
